38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
time:50:00:00 words:456
With the rapid development of our society, television became very popular, the programs showed on television also became more and more diverse. Some people even think that we can learn as much by watching television as we can by reading books, reading books is not so important today. However, the statement is much too shallow, people who take this statement know nothing about the huge differences between books and television.
Admittedly, television provides an active way to understand the world around us, we can visit the places we have not been to before through watching TV, we get a direct impression through the vivid pictures which we can not get from reading a book. However, there do exists something while television can not provide but books can. Academic works is a case of point. Watching television may show us planes flying in the sky, but it can not tell us what makes planes flying, as the same, television presents a colorful world in front of us, but when asking the question where are the colors come from, television can tell you nothing. One can not become a scientist by watching TV.
Most knowledge provided by television is just a presentation of phenomenon, though the phenomenon can be so active and vivid, they are too shallow. We can not get a systematic information by watching TV. Further more, even if the directors of television can make new programs to explain those academic questions, we still can not learn as much as by reading books. The reason is simple, watching television is a passive way of learning while reading books is an active way. Sitting in front of a television, we can only choose watch it or not, we can not request the television to show the things we want to learn.
The last but not the least, television is not good for our imagination and critical thinking, when reading a book, we have a wide space for our imagination cause what we get are just words. However, when watching TV, things are different, television has already presented the whole pictures in front of us, the space left for our imagination is so small. When reading a book, we control the speed, we reading and thinking, sometimes stop reading to taking some notes; When watching TV, the television controls the speed, we watching and watching, and after shut down the TV, we just remember the fantastic pictures but think of nothing.
After all, watching television is more a way of recreation than a way of learning. People choose to sit down in front of a TV because they want to take a good rest. If you really want to learn something, reading book is much a better way.
70"In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."
the author’s position: Every enterprise’s success depends on revitalization through new leadership.
My position: Revitalization through new leadership is an effective way to achieve success under some circumstances, however, its not the surest path to success for any enterprise.
