The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this memo, the president recommends that all stores should discontinue stocking imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses to maximize the profit. To support the recommendation, the author points out that: (1) last year, the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheeses;(2)a survey by a magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Close scrutiny of the evidence, however, reveals that it lends little credible support to the recommendation.

To begin with, the sale condition in the five newest stores does not necessarily serve to reflect that of all the stores. Actually, the claim rests on an unwarranted assumption that those new stores are analogous to the other stores in each of the respects. Obviously, this assumption is weak, since although there are several points of comparison, there must also be dissimilarity in different aspects as well, such as the preference, consumption behavior and religious of consumers and so on. Perhaps the consumers near those newly opened stores cannot afford the expensive but delicious imported cheeses, or perhaps they just purchase those imported ones on weekend or some special days while buy the domestic ones for daily diet. It is also possible that because of better economic condition, the consumers near the other stores prefer to purchase the imported ones while the domestic cheeses are in poor sale.

In the second place, the survey cited by the author is too vague to be informative. We are not informed any details about the magazine and how many subscribers responded. It is perhaps that lots of subscribers who are in favor of the imported cheeses did not respond the survey, or that just ten people responded the survey while six of them preferred the domestic cheeses. It is also possible that the subscribers of the magazine are usually domestic specialists or businessmen in the field of cheeses and inevitably, they support the domestic production. Moreover, the speaker does not provide any information about the magazine so that I am suspicious about the authority and credibility of this survey. In a word, the arguer fails to inform me whether the respondents constitute a sufficiently large sample so as to be representative of all the cheeses consumers and the insufficient information about the Cheeses of the World magazine also makes the recommendation doubtful.

In sum, the recommendation relies on some suspicious assumptions that make it unconvincing as it stands. To bolster this argument, the author must provide clear evidence-perhaps by way of a national survey—that reveals the consumers preference between domestic and imported cheeses. To better assess the recommendation, I would need to know the domestic and imported cheeses’ sale condition in the other stores.
