212. "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
只要值得,不择手段达到目的是合理的。
1) To begin with, it is difficult to judge whether one specific goal is worthy or not, considering different people have different concerns and benefits.
2) Secondly, when pursuing one’s personal so-call worthy goal, he or she should ensure that his or her behaviors never go beyond the limits of the morality and basic goods of the society.
3) Thirdly, it is true that at the society level, we ought to take any means to achieve the beneficial objective , even if some of them may do harm to the interests of a small group or turn out to be not noble.
Is it justifiable to take any means in order to achieve a so-called worthy goal? The speaker claims so. Though I concede that at society level, we should use any methods to make sure the well-being of the majority be protected, yet I insist that in the process of pursuing one's individual goal, he or she should be subjected to the moral and legal constraints of the society. Additionally, it is not always possible to determine whether a goal is worthy or not.
To begin with, considering that different people have different concerns and benefits, sometimes it is difficult to judge whether a specific goal is worthy or not. Taking the economical policy for example, in order to increase the degree of industrialization and elevate the average living level of the urban residents, the government tends to invest more on the development of cities, resulting in providing less money for rural construction. In this scenario, it is self-evident that the policy is worthy for those living in the cities but would confront strong resistance from countryside. Another telling example is that some developed countries have moved some manufactories with serious environmental pollution to those less developed countries. While this maneuver can effectively reduce the native contamination, it inevitably brings problems to another country. Therefore, when the policy makers deciding a goal, they cannot hastily draw the conclusion that it will be worthy without taking into account other group's concerns.
Secondly, when pursuing one's personal so-called worthy goal, he or she should guarantee that individual's behaviors never go beyond the limits of morality and basic goods of the entire society. For example, for those scholars and researchers, one of the worthy goals to them is to attain as much academic achievements as possible, thus enhancing their reputation in certain areas. But if the objective is achieved through plagiarizing or falsifying experimental results, they should be condemned by morality or even receive judicial punishment. Accordingly, they would be notorious instead of being notable. Another case in point that there always exists some athletes in the sports, who are crazy about brilliant success yet lacking the ability to obtain it, turning to illegal drugs for help. Most of them are discovered and punished by corresponding institutions and the rest remain apprehended. In any case, the means to achieving their goal has violated the essential spirit of sports---equality, thus deserving being censured.
Thirdly, it is true that at the society level, we ought to take any means to achieve the beneficial objective for the majority, even if some of them may do harm to the interests of a small group or turn out to be not noble. For instance, the unprecedented Three Gorges Project, is supposed to relieve the tension of electricity supply in south China, as well as serving to help settle the flood problem harassing China for a long time. But this project also means that the native inhabitants have no choice but leave their hometown, give up their traditional ways of living, and migrate to another place. For the well-being of the whole society, they have sacrificed in some degree. Moreover, to restore peace and social order, the government can employ any means, even force and violence, for the reason that other goals will not make any sense unless this fundamental objective is guaranteed.
To sum up, a goal is worthy only when it is limited to a specific group of people. And an individual should conform themselves to the morality of the society when chasing a goal. Moreover, the speaker's statement is reasonable if the goal is for the goods of the large percentage of society.
