185. "Scandals--whether in politics, academia, or other areas--can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's statement that scandals can serve to help capture our attention on existing problems in politics, academia, and other fields, and even lead to the solutions of those problems eventually. In most cases, the speaker or reformer will keep reticent for the reason that they themselves are likely to be implicated in those shameful conspiracies.
To begin with, the revelation of scandal related to politics can inform the public of the fact that the leader, or some officials in the government, or a political party may have committed illegal conducts to pursue interests for themselves, which is supposed to degrade the democracy in the country. Therefore, it provides the public a chance to supervise the behaviors of the leader and the government to ensure the justice of the nation is well protected, thus accelerating the process of constructing a society with more freedom and equality. One typical example to illustrate this is the ammunition trade scandal in India. According to the video tapes provided by a Website in India, the chairman of Janata Party was found to have received bribes in a trade of weapons, which ultimately resulted in the resignation of the chairman and other judicial punishment for those governmental officials who are involved in it. It is no doubt that this scandal will force the India government to keep a tighter control over the ammunition business, and take necessary steps to prevent corruption and defend the dignity of justice.
Secondly, the exposition of scandal in academic field will cause the public question more about the authenticity of results in the scientific research. This will certainly help reduce the plagiarism and the behavior of counterfeiting experimental data, and form healthier atmosphere for the scientific research to develop normally. In 2005, Chen Jin, the dean of microelectronic department of Shanghai Jiaotong University, was accused of having practiced fraud and deception in manufacturing "Hanxin" family chips. After further investigation, Shanghai Jiaotong University removed Chen Jin from the position of dean of microelectronic department and terminated the contract of employing him as professional of the university. This scandal and a series of penalty will cause other researchers think twice before they present their research results, and can better the academic environment beyond all doubt .
Finally, the scandals discovered in press circles force people to exam closely about accuracy of news and avoid being mislead by it; the public will gradually develop the ability of independent thinking and be able to make wise judgement when confronted with large number of reports. Jack Kelley, the ex-US TODAY report, has been discovered to have fabricated substantial potions of at least eight stories, resigned from the newspaper after he admitted conspiring with a translator to mislead editors overseeing an inquiry into his work. Consequently, according to a recent survey conducted by US TODAY, only thirty-six percent of Americans believe in what they have read, watched or heard from the media. This story is a revealing fact we can not always believe what the newspaper, the TV, or any other media has told us. Instead, we need to form our own judgement by gathering and analyzing the massive information delivered by the media.
To sum up, on the one hand, scandals sometimes can frustrate us with its nature of deception, swindling, violation of law, or immorality. On the other hand, however, it can expose some serious problem existing in our world and cause us to seek for appropriate solutions to them, thus promoting the development of the society.
