TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 619 TIME: 上午 12:45:00 DATE: 2006-7-11
Our modern era has been marked with tremendous marvelous achievements, which promote the interconnection, intercommunication between various interests of groups, organizations, countries, even regional cultures, thus make the trend of globalization increasingly prevailing. Looking into the phenomena, we would find that to some extent, the way people look, dress, and act could indeed reflected individuals' attitudes and interests, hidden behind which is a society's ideas and values. While basically being favor of the author's viewpoint, I also find that besides the appearance and behavior of a particular individual, a combination of other factors also exert their functions in determining the outside images and behaviors of people.
True, there are times when one's appearance represent and express the attitude and interests deep in his or her heart. After all, no things could better demonstrate a person's attitudes than the outside image, since it is the most direct and easily-identified way to show one, show the one's attitude, as well as show the interests. The prevailing trend that blue jeans or some other fashions attacked and affected the worldwide fashion of dressing, indicating the aspiration toward absolute freedom and liberation. Also, the Hippies' quirk way of dressing presents them in a particular way to express their dissatisfaction with the mainstream ideology at that time. Precisely speaking, the way people dress is sometimes a tools to express oneself rather than a mere decoration with no meaning.
Look further into the fashion of outside image, the individual's attitudes and interests are usually directed and regulated by the environment where they are settled in, that is, a society's ideas and values. Traveling around the world, we would find that every corner of the earth is replete with the examples. The French dress romantically, indicating their romantic culture and long history of their artistry. The American dress colorfully, demonstrating their desperate aspiration toward the freedom and human rights, and willingness to defense their Utopian. Also, as for some Asian countries, for instance, the Japanese dress formally and usually unified, representing their spirits of teamwork and cooperation. Thus usually, a particular individual's attitudes and interests perfectly mirrored the social popular trends at a time, or at a certain phase of the development of the holistic society.
While admitting the irreplaceable role of our humankind's attitudes and interests in determining the appearance and behaviors of people, we should also be aware of the fact that not everything concerning the attitudes and interests of an individual could be expressed through their images and conducts. After all, a person is a complex and sophisticated package. They may be unwilling to express their true feelings sometimes. If so, the appearance serves to mislead the others and make them believe the untrue. Talking with a sophisticated person, one would find little values or even the opposite values to the true value his or her treasures. Singling out only an aspect of an overall person, at a particular time, and at a certain place, is obviously incomplete and thus may convey us the false impression toward the person. The only way to avoiding creating this illusion, is to resort to other factors which also serve as the reflection of the attitudes and interests, such as the friends one keeps in touch with, the response when one is in an emergency, etc.
Simply put, our humanities' appearances and behaviors do indeed express and reflect our ideas as well as the values treasured by the group we belong to. Despite these traits, there still lies more than the look and the act, which also exert their functions in demonstrating the hidden attitudes in one's mind. In view of deciphering the illusion conveyed by the superficial expression, the other factors could be resorted to.
