ISSUE11 "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
With the help of globalization, nations are related with each other more and more closely. Through the scrutiny to the different social problems of different countries, we will discover that these problems are similar to a great extent even in quite different nations. I agree with the speaker that a global university designed to solve the world's most persistent social problems will serve the interests of all nations.
Establishing such university is necessary to some degree. First, nowadays, no a single nation can develop even survive without the connection to other countries. Consider that a financial crisis—or a political insurrection or natural disaster—in one country can spell trouble for foreign companies, many of which are multinational in that they rely on the labor forces, equipment, and materials of other nations. So some social problems are not only limited in a country, but also be faced by many relevant nations. Second, the reasons for the persistence of some serious social problems have the same psychological motivation of the human, which is a little relevant to diverse situations of different nations. For instance, drug abuse is result from such psychological problems as avarice, indulgence, jealousy and so forth. Solving these problems is beyond the ability of single country, and only with the cooperation and endeavor of different nations---such as establishing a global university, human will have the possibility to conquer these persistent problems.
The global university also provides various countries to learn from each other to solve analogous social problems. Although the different nations may face similar problems, but the degree of graveness of these problems is diverse. Some problems may be disasters in one nation while slight flaws in another. For example, almost every country have the abortion problem, some countries treat it as severe ethic depravity, and prohibit it strictly with laws, but this behavior is still carried underground frequently. While in other countries, abortion is not placed great moral pressure and governments take other means rather than laws to limit it, but the frequency it happen is lower. Global universities offer the opportunity for these countries to compare their different approaches to learn the advantages from others and then solve the social problems.
We should realize that establishing such global university has some requirement or else may cause some problems. The university asks for the support from every nation--not only in the financial aspect, but also in the intellectual investment and willing to cooperate. Therefore, in the process of solving the similar problems, every country--in spite of its national power, has the equal right and opportunities to take part in, and in turn, the solutions to the social problems, which result from the effort of all nations, should be shared by the whole human. In addition, because of the ethical value systems, culture background, customs and traditions are varying from different nations, some bifurcations and even conflicts may appear. So it requires every student in the global university to have the tolerance and open mind to accept different ideas in order to avoid the negative effects of the differences.
In sum, all nations will benefit from the global university which is well supported by different countries and operated under the positive and friendly cooperation. To make sure we can attain such goal, every nation should put aside the prejudice or indifference, share the tasks and improve the understanding with each other. |
