The process of globalization has raised a myriad of social problems, such as environmental pollution, nuclear weapons, terrerism. To solve them, the speaker gives us an alternative--a global university supported by all nations. Though appears seductive, it seems too idealistic to me for the reason that it is neither practical nor necessary to build such a university.

To begin with, to protect their own benefits to the largest extent, every nation involved in supporting the university will spare no effort to affect the principles of solving the problems. For example, when solving the international terrerism, one of the most pressing troubles in the world and having caused numerous tragedies, nations as the source of the terrirism and countries as the victims would encounter intense debate over how to prevent it from happening. While the victim countries insist that the source countries should take necessary steps and dedicate more to attack the terrerists, the source countries protest that the existence of terrerism can be contributable to unfair policy made by the source countries, so they should pay more attention to the justness of their policy towards other nation. In this scenario, no agreement can be easily reached. Full of conflicts and disagreements, the university has difficulty in preserving some basic value upon which the university depends to operate.

Secondly, there indeed exist some international problems, which are so difficult and complex that the students of the global universities can be helpless. For instance, war, a problem haunting human beings for thousands of years, still poses a great threat to the world. The existence of war is due to the belligerent nature of human beings and the basic conflict between nations. Thus we should not expect the students graduated from the global university to persuade the people of the conflicting countries to drop their weapons. Moreover, when the problem comes to the religion collision, it becomes more complicated since the student assigned to solve the problem is likely to have his or her own religion. Therefore, any suggestion or solution from him or her can be regarded as partial. In a word, because of the complexity of the problems, as well as the students' own background and standpoint, some problems will remain unsolved only by building such a global university.

Finally, instead of depending on a global university to solve the persistent social problems, we should call on all nations to join efforts to conquer them. The globalization has made the whole world a seamless web--people interact with each other more closely than ever before. So any global problem cannot be settled without close cooperation of all nations. A telling example is the environmental problem resulting from the industrialization. The Kyoto protocol, signed by 141 countries in 2005, aims at constricting the discharge of carbon dioxide and other gas accused of causing the greenhouse effect. This protocol can be viewed as a collaborative effort of all countries to protect the environment. And if it can be effectively carried out by all parts, we can expect the solution of the global warming. Moreover, to solve the drug problem, police from all countries should establish cooperation between each other, including share of the information of the criminals and acting in conjunction to apprehend them. We can see the achievements are obvious, yet the efforts need go on.

To sum up, a global university is not as effective as it appears to solve the world's persistent social problems. And to achieve the goal, no measure is more important than the collaborative effort and close cooperation of all nations. Only by doing this do we stand a chance to have a more promising future.
