TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

In this issue the author claims that unless it is designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student the education will not be truly effective. As far as I am concerned, I can hardly agree with such point of view.

First of all it might be impossible nowadays for the education to meet the individual needs and interest of each student taking the contemporary conditions into account. There are as whole less teachers compared to the number of students in the society. Averagely, it is common for tens of students to share a teacher in one classroom and to consider all students’ needs and interests in one classroom might be unpractical for most teachers. For example, when a teacher is giving a lesson on mathematics, it would not be surprise that a handful students in the classroom have already mastered the formulas taught by the teacher and willingly to do some practices with those formulas, while others on the same classroom might still feel confused about certain parts of the formulas and hope the teacher can give them some more instructions. In this condition, it is hard for the teacher to meet both the needs of the two kinds of students and he or she has to satisfy most of the students instead of every one of them.

Secondly, sometimes the students are not really aware of what their need is and what they are interesting in. It is somewhat ironical to ask a child who entries a school for the first day whether he likes philosophy more or physics. This question can even confuse those students of higher grades until they have studied both of the disciplines. As a result it is necessary for the school to determine some basic curriculums that the students should learn, considering that the students are not experienced enough to know what is their real need and interested. No one can realize that he or she is found of swimming unless he or she learns how to swim. What's more, even the students are sure that some course are not their interests should the course be eliminated for him or her? It is hard to say. For instance, though those the students major in arts and literature may not interested in computer science, they should learned some knowledge in this field for the purpose of the daily use. Even a writer needs computer to search information, communication and writing his or her works.

Admittedly, the interests and needs of students should be taken into account during education to make the process of teaching more effective and more acceptable. A case in point is that if a student has the talent of math, it might be waste of time for him to follow the lessons which are designed for ordinary students. And the one who is interested in arts should be sent to an art school instead of being lagged back in an engineering department.

As a conclusion, though it is correct for the needs and interests of students being taken into account in education, it is impossible and not necessary for the education to meet every individual needs and interests of each student.   (532 words)
