issue51--"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Will education be truly effective only when it is specifically desighed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student, as the speaker asserts? As far as I am concerned, it is largely true that desighing specific educational contents and methods for each student according to their different needs and interests would be efficient, but it is not the most practical way considering some limitations.
I concede that the speaker is, to a large extent, on the correct side of this issue. As we all know, it is only when one is really interested in something that one is mostly likely to try his/her best to engage in it, and in turns, achieves more in the development of his/her personal life. Columbus Bartholomew, a Italian explorer, is a good example. Influenced by The Travels of Marco Polo, he was very interested in the civilization of the east world. Therefore, he made up his mind to seek westward passenge to establish the trade route to known trading partners in China and the east Indies. With the support of Spain, Colunbus totally led four expedition to achieve his destination, going through all kinds of difficulties. Although he reached America by mistake, he was still honored by people for he had altered history trememdously by initiating large-scale European colonization of the Americas and setting stage for commercial and cultural exchange between eastern and western hemispheres.
In addition, another purpose of education, besides its benefit to personal development, is to cultivate people who can satisfy the needs of the society, hence promoting the development of human beings. The seciety needs people with various abilities to work efficiently. For example, doctors are needed to keep people healthy; lawyers are required to ask for legal rights for people; artist to give people the sense of eathetics…and the list will go on. Every occupation plays a indispensible role in daily lives. If the education system ignores the interests and needs of the students and imposes what they suppose to be important on the students, the world will become chaos. Imagine that all students are forced to learn the same courses which is only favored by a small proportion of people, how could we expect them to become a skilled worker in the future just in the field which they find little interest? Let alone making great contribution to the society!
Nevertheless, in respect that the educational resource is limited, it is almost impossible for the schools to meet the need of every student. An ordinary school, especially in developing countries, does not have adequate teachers and finance to find out what everyone’s interests are and give each one a specifically designed course. The fact is that a teacher usually teaches several classes in one semester and hardly can he/she have more energy left after class to care about the needs of each of his/her students.
In sum, I agree with the speaker’s assertion that education should meet the individual interests and needs of every student to be effective considering the benefits it can bring to the development of both individual and the society. However, its feasibility is doubted. To better achieve the objectives of education, perhaps we should consider the students’s needs as much as possile according to our real conditions and at the same time gurantee all the students receive basic courses. |
