TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

With respect to whether or not all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach to improve the teaching quality ,I strongly agree with the author's claim that all students and faculty stand to gain various benefits when professors complement his profession with outside working experience.

Admittedly , there are some disciplines which do not need the outside experience such as Philosophy and theoretical physics. For these areas, the professors are more prefer to seek the truth about the humanity and the universe . Consider Hawking who is cited as the next most important scientist to Einstein , develops the theory of great explosive and singular point which is a explanation about how did our universe originate. What benefit will be if we  require and even enforce him to take part in some social work? The only outcome would be the damage  of the talented person's percise time. Therefore , in these pure theoretical areas, professors can totally focus their attention to particular research.

However, in most disciplines , keeping association with outside to gain a certain amount of experience will benefit the students as well as faulty  because during putting into work in the real world , their theories will be proven to be right or not and thus improving the quality of instruction with no doubt. When Adam Smith ,one of the greatest ecnomitists ,enunciated that  free competition in the marketplace is of importance and effectivity ,some people did not believe the theory of laisser faire ,until Bristish became one of the most powerful and wealthy country  after operating his theory .And today all of the Economic students study his theory as a fundamental part of this discipline.  So as Einstein's. How do he let other believe the theory of relativity which disrupt the classic theory of Newton? In a certain degree , experience which gained form various working outside experts and high -tech workers contribute to it. So the theory need to be proved by practice.

Equally importance is another factor that to keep up with the change of real world, all faculty should participate the working outside to revise their ideas or develop new theories. It is more likely happened in the social science area. There has been a vehement debate about whether or not should government control the national economy ?At the early age, most people disapprove it . After the great depression, most economists tend to concede that certain amount of government control is beneficial and necessary indeed. So in order to develop ideas and theories, perfessors must keep in touch with the outside world.

In sum, the outside working experience is benefical for all faculty and student to improve the educational quality at the college and university level.
