题目:ISSUE160 - "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
字数:499 日期:2006-7-18
position: balance
1 一个成功的领导者必需有坚定的信念和目标才会成功
2 也要注重大众的观点
3 但不要轻易地改变
Nowadays, the ability of leaders has been recognized as a more and more important factor in the success of a country or a corporation. I strongly agree with the speaker’s assertion that an effective leader should possess such qualities that he has his own principles, he has[去掉逗号和he has,改成and] the strength to insist[改成insist on,persist in,或者stick to] his beliefs. However, everyone has defects and may fail to take into account certain factors which might result in the last[可以去掉last,或者如果是最后的失败改成final failure或者eventual failure] failure. Therefore, an effective leader also should care[care是不及物的,改成care about或者should be concerned with] and ponders the public opinion.
On the one hand, a successful leader always has steadfast principles and objectives. For instant, Seward, Secretary of U.S. in the 1860s, agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7 million. At the time, the public thought Seward was mad to spend so much on a piece of land that was mostly unexplored. Nevertheless, Seward still insisted it is[was] worth purchasing and so he did[这里did只能指代insist]. Utimitately, the discovery of gold and petroleum in Alaska ended people's debate and it proved to be a very advisible decision. Besides, some other famous persons can also be taken for example, such as Franklin Roosevelt, Michael Dell and so forth. The commonness[没有这个词] of them are their unshakable beliefs and objectives.
On the other hand, an effective leader should also have patience and willingness to listen to others' suggestions and opinions. As the old saying goes that three cobblers equal a genius.[应该进一步解释这个saying和应当听取别人意见的联系,感觉这个saying用在这里不太有说服力,和后面的in other words说的相互不是很贴切] In other words, selectively accepting some popular opinions would benifit the whole work[什么whole work?]. If a leader completely ignores others' opinion, he or she is bound to be cut the public support and leads[改成led,被动] to failure undoutedly. Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister in the decade before[二十世纪,in the last century], is a case in point. He [加was]committed to his own presumption that the major enemy of Britain was Soviet Union and Germany was just seeking to be strong enough to defend Europe. Though been[been改成being] told to be wary of Germany, he didn't accept the advice. As a result, the WWII broke out, and the whole world, including Britain, was dragged into a catastrophe. According to the lessons drawn from others' mistakes, the correct way to be an effective leader should[这个加be] accept the popular opinion which is reasonable.[the correct way to be an effective leader should be accept the popular opinion which is reasonable.]
Nevertheless, a leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little. For one thing, someone may only see the partial benifit, while the leader must see further and make a decision whether it should be accepted. For another, it is impossible that the opinions of the people are the same. The leader have to balance the problem and decide what to do. If a leader doesn't know how to distinguish the good suggestions and the bad ones[distinguish between good suggestions and bad ones或者distinguish good suggestions from bad ones] and is changable to different opinions, he may be ragarded as irresolution and will lose the trust of public.
In summary, an effective leader should not only be capable to remain[capable of remaining] consistently committed to particular principles or objectives, but also be attentive to the public opinion and adopt useful advice timely.
各段间的逻辑关系:到底是①并列②转折③,还是①转折②转折③,不太清晰,body3和body1意思比较贴合,都是说要坚定,干脆可以合在一起。
