TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 472 TIME: 1:15:54 DATE: 2006-7-19
The author claims that people must choose between tradition and modernization, since they are incompatible. Although to some degree I agree with the author's assertion, I think tradition and modernization can also coexist, and both have some profound impacts on each other.
It is true that under some conditions tradition and modernization are exclusive, especially when there are conflicts between them. Such condition is more likely to happen when some traditional ways are not suitable to the modern society any longer. A striking example would be the DDT ever widely used in the world as a kind of pesticide, whose inventor even won the Nobel Prize. As the rapid development of modern society and living standard, more and more people paid attention to the environment and researches found that DDT had some chemicals that lead a negative effect to the biosphere, which made DDT not used any more in agriculture.Consecuntly, some traditions are not compatible with the modern society and must be abolished.
However, many traditions, referring to customs, ways of lives, values etc. are also handed down from generation to generation and still influence the people in the modern society. The modernization does not change or modify the traditions that has rooted deeply in the human society but well inherits them, thus making them still existing in the modern socity.Christs nowadays still pray in the churches every week no matter what happened. It has been completely a part of their lives, acting as a traditional behavior. Another good example would be the Spring Festival, the biggest festival in Chinese culture that may be originated thousands of years ago. On that day, no matter how hard, the people would try to stay with their family members celebrating a new Chinese year's coming. Therefore, although some traditions gradually disappear due to the rapid pace of modernization, many still remain unchanged and are compatible with the modern society.
On the other hand, the modernization also influences some traditions and brings about many new meanings to them. The swift development of the technology enormously changes people's life as well as having some impacts on the traditional ways of lives. For example, many people choose to write mails to communicate with others, traditionally in the form of paper.Nowadays, thanks to the prosperity of the Internet and the popularity of E-mail, people can easily keep in touch with others only by using the computer. Thus, Modernization is not only still compatible with the tradition but also to some extent makes the tradition more suitable to the modern society.
In sum, the author over-generalizes when it comes to the relationship between tradition and modernization-the two are incompatible and one must choose between them. From what has been discussed above, the conclusion can be safely drawn that although sometimes tradition and modernization are exclusive, but usually they can coexist in that some traditions still remain in the modern society and the modernization also lead to a positive impact on the traditions.
