TOPIC: ARGUMENT145 - A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

1)不能证明snore导致了overweight。
2)不能证明snore导致了sleep apnea和tiredness。
3)不能证明作者的suggestion是有效的。

The arguer concludes that anyone who snores should eat less and should exercise more in order to have a better heath condition. However, the evidence provided and the logic used by the author fails to bolster his conclusion. As far as I am concerned, the argument suffers the following flaws.

To begin with, the author falsely depends on the unreliable study that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than normal people. Yet the author does not provide enough information with regard to the causal connection between snoring and gaining weight. It is entirely possible that other factors have resulted in the respondents’ overweight. For example, genes inherited from their parents may make them more likely to put on weight. Besides, unhealthy mood may also contribute to one's overweight. Thus without ruling out such possibilities, the author cannot justifiably draw the conclusion that it is the snoring that leads to people's overweight.

Secondly, there is not sufficient evidence to prove that sleep apnea has resulted from sleep apnea. The author fails to provide other factors that can cause sleep apnea. Perhaps the diet of the patient has constituted some material that plays the vital role in causing people to wake occasionally at the night. It is equally possible that the undue pressure at the work can make people feel distressed even at sleep. Even though the sleep apnea can be attributable to snoring, the author does not provide any basis upon which the causal connection between the brief waking up the tiredness people feel at daytime can be established. Perhaps it is overwork or bad mood that has made them feel tired. All these factors mentioned leave the author’s assumption to be doubtable.

Finally, even assuming that the two foregoing assumptions are both reliable, the author's suggestion that those who snore should eat less than the average person and to exercise more is unwarranted. Because there is not sufficient evidence to substantiate that eating less will conquer the problem of overweight. Exercising more may soothe the problem temporarily. But considering that snoring can make people feel tired during the day, exercising more is impractical. Besides, the author does not present other problems resulting from the snoring. These problems will remain unsolved under the author's suggestion which obviously emphasizes on prevent overweight. So his suggestion has done little to solve the problem radically.

To sum up, to make his argument more convincing, the author would have to provide more evidence of how snoring has caused the overweight and the interruption of breathing at sleep. In addition, he would have to suggest more effective medical treatment for those who are suffering from snoring.

论述第一段,TS提得不准确,一来,题目中的第一句话,是对下文的总起,是一个summary.而study正指的是下面的论述,不可作为攻击的一点。其实这一段可以改成“confuse the relationship of snore and weight gaining with the casual one”
另外两段都 分析得挺到位的。继续努力
