Issue144(艺术类) "It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value.” a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
正文:
The author believes that only the artists themselves can give society those of lasting values. I do not agree with the conclusion basically. Although it is the artist who created those excellent works, however, those critics have also played an important role, positive or negative, in making those works of lasting values.

Firstly, critics who have deep understandings to those artists can lead common people to those artists' works which deserve high evaluations. Some critics can evaluate many great works from a particular angle which common people can not attain. And a critic, who is familiar with one artist's works, may even have a unique insight toward his or her work which many laypersons may not have. Hence, many people get to know one certain great artist's works may be the result of some critics' contribution. It is those critics, together with those artists, who have made many wonderful works known to populace. Both artists and critics have a great contribution to the development of the art.

Secondly, many critics bring out some kinds of important feedbacks toward those artists and their productions. These feedbacks will improve artists to produce many other works which may have much more higher values, comparing to those former works. Many advices coming from critics might be hard to carry out, but in order to produce better works, artists should accept those reasonable suggestions. As a result, artists will make progress steadily, and part of the progress made by artists should be attributed to those critics who have put out many rational suggestions.

However, not all of critics can bring out good advice. Many times they will put out wrong suggestions or have no correct advice toward masterpiece. Some of them even can not distinguish outstanding works from ordinary ones in fact. Take Van Gough, the famous Holland painter, as an example. All of his poor life, only one of his paintings is sold out at a low price. He led a miserable life and was looked down upon by many people, let alone about any criticism coming from artistic critics of his works. If some critic could find the wonderful point of his paintings, then the greatest artist would not be seen as a common artist all his life. His death is a great loss to the whole artistic realm. Hence, sometimes those critics will fail in picking out first-rank works from numerous ones.

To sum up, critics are as important as artists in making those works wildly known. With the help of many critics, artists can produce much more masterpieces. However, while being aware of the importance of the critics, we should also know that in some situations, critics would be of no help in evaluating first-class works. Critics may make mistake in any condition. But at the same times, we should not ignore the importance of critics, after all, they are very important in evaluating artistic works.
