TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

Are tradition and modernization incompatible? Many argue it is, saying that one must choose between them. Insofar, the wheel of history rolls on, some tradition has stepped the stage of history, while some other has entered into modernization.

To begin with, I would like to admit that some tradition has been discarded, however not because it is traditional but is proved false by modern society. Some tradition handed down through generations has been reviewed by modern criterions, despite it may have a long history recognized by man as right, once it is proved wrong, not suitable for the progress of our society, would be jettisoned by man without sentiment. Consider gender prejudice, a common phenomenon in past, which was regarded as a natural way of treating women, now is being abandoned by most societies across the world. During that time, equal rights to women with men are regarded as ridiculous; along with advances democracy as a basic human nature, this viewpoint reversed. Likewise, giving civil rights to blacks is also regarded as dangerous claims, even by some housewives, who are also prejudiced by men in the same period, now is viewed as natural thing, becoming an indispensable part of democracy. The development in technology and science is a more outstanding example that new theories of certain scientific fields substitute the old ones, and most of time, the new one itself is not perfect, waiting to be changed or even replaced. Some tradition would and sometimes should be discarded because they are wrong or not suitable for the further progress of our society, then give way to more advanced one.

In the second place, no one would argue seriously that tradition is the basis of modernization. Many fields of modern society is being developed based on the accumulation handed down generations, even in some most futuristic areas, may also be inspired by ancestors. Through divergent means, tradition has entered into the modernization. In the field of art, artists can draw useful lessons from the artworks created by those famous artists in the past. For example, a large variety of artworks during Renaissance period leave future generations a splendid culture treasure, a treasure attracting countless artists studying and then learning from. When comes to the field of science and technology, the efforts of predecessors play an major role in further developing, no matter the theory is right or wrong, both contributing the development. Some may argue that the computer might be purely innovative creation of modern society. Nevertheless, they seem to forget abacus, the most primitive "computer", giving modern inventors inspiration to create calculator, then to today's computer.

The history offers a continuing story of compatibility of tradition and modernization, what we view as modernization today might become tomorrow’s tradition. Take a realistic example, happening in today's China; traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine deriving from the Western countries are keeping abreast. Although they differ in their theory of causing disease, their methods of curing patients, they have the same goal, saving lives and relieving pains. SARS, an severe aspiratory This case helps us to accept this view, tradition and modernization are not contradictive to each other, as long as they are able to benefit to our lives, otherwise even modernization must be abandoned.

In sum, from what has been discussed below, there is no need to make a choice between tradition and modernization; instead, we can make use of both of them to enable the rapid progress of our society.

Are tradition and modernization incompatible? Many argue it is, saying that one must choose between them. Insofar, the wheel of history rolls on, some tradition has stepped [out?]the stage of history, while some other has entered [evolved是不是更合适?] into modernization.

To begin with, I would like to admit that some tradition has been discarded, however not because it is traditional but is proved false by modern society. Some tradition handed down through generations has been reviewed by modern criterions, despite[despite后面加名词性成分的哦] it may have a long history recognized by man as right, once it is proved wrong, not suitable for the progress of our society, would be jettisoned[不错] by man without sentiment[不确定这样的搭配,without hesitation也可以吧]. Consider gender prejudice, a common phenomenon in past, which was regarded as a natural way of treating women, now is being abandoned by most societies across the world. During that time[that time指代不明,in past~~], equal[equal在这边作什么成分?] rights to women with men are regarded as ridiculous; along with advances democracy as a basic human nature, this viewpoint reversed. Likewise, giving civil rights to blacks[blacks指代黑人不是很好吧,比较文明一点的ms是用Afro-American] is[was] also regarded as dangerous claims, even by some housewives, who are also prejudiced by men in the same period[housewives这句我觉得多了,最好还是不要了,多了这层意思,看的不清楚~~], now is viewed as [a] natural thing, becoming an indispensable part of democracy. The development in technology and science is a more outstanding example that new theories of certain scientific fields substitute the old ones, and most of time, the new one itself is not perfect, waiting to be changed or even replaced. Some tradition would and sometimes should be[这样的结构不错,学习:)] discarded because they are wrong or not suitable for the further progress of our society, then give way to more advanced one.

In the second place, no one would argue seriously[argue seriously是否认的意思么? 我没有用过这样的结构,不是很确定] that tradition is the basis of modernization. Many fields of modern society is[are] being[being?去掉吧] developed based on the accumulation handed down generations, even in some most futuristic areas, may also be inspired by ancestors. Through divergent[divergent不是很合适吧,用diverse] means, tradition has entered into the modernization. [For example应该放在这边的]In the field of art, artists can draw useful lessons from the artworks created by those famous artists in the past. For example, a large variety of artworks during Renaissance period leave future generations a splendid culture[cultural] treasure, a treasure attracting countless artists studying and then learning from. When [it]comes to the field of science and technology, the efforts of predecessors play an major role in further developing, no matter the theory is right or wrong, both contributing [to] the development. Some may argue that the computer might be purely innovative creation of modern society. Nevertheless, they seem to forget abacus, the most primitive "computer", giving modern inventors inspiration to create calculator, then to[去掉to,这个应该是和calculator并列的] today's computer.

The history offers a continuing story of compatibility of tradition and modernization, what we view as modernization today might become tomorrow’s tradition. Take a realistic example, happening in today's China; traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine deriving from the Western countries are keeping[keeping?working] abreast. Although they differ in their theory of causing disease, their methods of curing patients, they have the same goal, saving lives and relieving pains[saving这个短语最好还是和same goal连在一起吧]. SARS, an severe aspiratory This case helps us to accept this view, tradition and modernization are not contradictive to each other, as long as they are able to benefit to[去掉to] our lives, otherwise even modernization must be abandoned[otherwise这句我觉得多了:)].

In sum, from what has been discussed below, there is no need to make a choice between tradition and modernization; instead, we can make use of both of them to enable the rapid progress of our society.[结尾比较清楚,很好]
