题目:ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States recommends that their stores should stop stocking imported cheese and focus on domestic cheeses. To bolster his claim, the arguer cited the fact that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Additionally, according to a survey, there is an increasing tendency that people prefer to domestic cheeses. It seems to be sound at first glance. Close inspection of these facts, however, reveals that they lend little credible support to the recommendation.
In the first place, the argument relies on an unreasonable assumption that all the customers of the chain of cheese stores have the same preferance. We are informed that it is the newest store at which the five best-selling cheeses were all domestic cheeses. So it is entirely possible it is not that case in other chain stores. Perhaps in other chain stores, imported cheeses are the most salable instead of domestic ones. Since lacking of clearer evidence, it is untenable to claim that domestic cheeses are more salable, let alone take measures to improve profits aim at the assumption.
In the second place, the arguer fails to provide sufficient evidence to justify that domestic cheeses produced by other companies are as popular as Wisconsn. Maybe Wisconsn is the best band of domestic cheeses and is the most favorite thoughout the whole nation. Though Wisconsin cheddar cheese sold well last year, which does not guarantee all the domestic cheese would sell well since domestic cheeses includes cheese from other companies.
In the third place, the creditability of the survey conducted by Cheeses of the World magazine is open to doubt. We don't know what kind of magazine it is, how is the constitution of the subscribers ,who carry the survey , how it is carried and whether it fairly reflect the fact of sales in cheese. Maybe the magazine is a local one, which has a small number of readers. Thus, the survey not representative for the idea of whole nation. In short, without more information about the survey, it is difficult to assess the merit of the recommendation.
Finally, even the arguer can justify the forgoing assumptions, it is still worth to discuss what is the best way to enhance the profits. Focusing on one kind of cheese may limited the customers' choice, which may result in the decrease in the amount of customers.
To sum up, the recommendation rests on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To substatiate the argument, the arguer sould consider and eliminate all the other possibilities discussed above. Perhaps the arguer should conduct a nationwide survey and then draw his final consideration. |
