TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
WORDS: 822 TIME: 45min DATE: 2006-7-23
The leaders, model role imitated by the public, who are always supervised by the people, should maintain the highest ethical and moral standards in order to be an effective one. However, such these standards do not mean that leaders should rigorously conform to but should be wise to modulate them. In my opinion, to be an effective leaders the ethical and moral standards are some measure which can be evaluated by the public, but when faced with some cases which are relevant to own countries or groups these standards are not only examination for evaluating whether the leaders are effective or not.
As for the political leaders, the ethical and moral standards absolutely play an important role among the leaders. To be an effective leader, in my view, the first ability is not whether he or she can be competent for the work but how he or she can face the works. An energetic and accommodating attitude is needed for serving the country or groups. Consider, for example, there are lots of leaders who have contributed to his or her own countries because their own a prerequisite that moral and ethical standards have affected their view about the development of the country. Without these standards that warn them they cannot keep a clear mind and responsibility. Clinton, once the president of America, has been entangled with his sexual scandal. Although he commits this mistake, he always kept the moral and ethical standards for his people. In his political life, American economy has been one of the greatest times in the history and people ultimately thought he was a good political leader because he leads people to a higher economic level. Although some people would say that this leader has committed some ridiculous wrongdoings, most people would not believe that he was an effective leader regarding his contributions for the whole country. In short, by only evaluating the ethical or moral standards cannot rightly evaluate a leader whether he or she is effective but should examine by the contributions by one leader.
Yet, can we say that the ethical and moral standards for evaluating a leader are not needed? The answer is not. Because to be an effective leader, not only the aptitude for govern a country or a group is necessary, but a good emotional attitude for people is also needed. If one leader has not own an ethical and moral standards for his or her people, then he would be punished by the public. No other examples than Nixon, the major role of the Water Gate, can illustrate my opinion. After the scandal of Water Gate people began suspect about their once heroes and hesitate whether their country can go further for the later time. If the leaders cannot be believed by the public, then all his contributions or ability would be suspected by people. Nixon's retirement has not been apologized by the public due to his cheating behavior to his people. And I would also like to illustrate another recent example in soccer filed, the scandal of Italian leaguer match. Recently, in sports area, no other events than this scandal can be paid most attention on public. With this scandal, all the soccer fans of Juventus or even other clubs' fans would be very disappointed about their once heroes. The boss of Juventus has cheated people and the world soccer fans. In this case, of course, the ethical and moral standards should be the important factor for explaining this scandal. So we should say that if the leader owned a good ethical and moral standard but cannot serve for his members then he cannot be an effective leader.
However, the "rule of jungle" tells us that when encounter with the world relationship with other countries, a good standard of ethic and moral cannot be the only standard for evaluating whether a leader is effective or not. The political events between countries in the world like the correlation among business corporations. A higher ethical or moral emotion cannot help a country or company stand higher in relative field. People often like to examine the officials worked in company to be cunning or horrible, but if they always own a higher moral and ethical emotion to face their so-called "enemy" or competitors, the result would be a failure sooner or later. Considering the IT field, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and all of the other companies loose their ethical and moral emotions to each other, but when they faced with their customers these standards can be returned because they should maintain their development.
In conclusion, the highest ethical and moral standards for evaluating whether a leader is effective or not should not be played much attention. If a leader owns a good standard but cannot serve the public, we could not believe he or she is effective. Also, we cannot consider a leader is not effective because of his bad attitudes to other members. |
