Issue 36
"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals is decided by those who live after them rather than by their contemporaries. Actually, in my view, both the contemporaries and their offspring play a significant role in the judgment of the individuals’ greatness, the former from the short term effects while the later from the long term effects; what’s more, the opinions from those who live after them are more objective and complete.

No one can deny the significance of their contemporaries in recognizing the greatness of the individuals, especially in the realm of art. Artistic works can be judged by their first value by whether or not satisfy their readers’ aesthetic taste. For supporting example, one need look no further than the greatness of Mark Twain, an world-wild famous novelist, whose works exert positive influence upon his present society and been high evaluated by his contemporaries , even today Mark twain is a best-selling author and household name. For another convictive illustration, in the political realm, the greatness of a politic figure can be decided by his contemporaries in any country as well as by his citizens for the simple reason that his contemporaries can experience the influence of the measures introduced by him and make fail judgments on it.

Those who live after them may make more objective and well-round statement on the greatness of individuals than their contemporaries. On the one hand, towards the greatness of the individuals, the views of their offspring will turn out to be objective as they need not to take the background of the individuals’ era and the influence to that age into consideration. On the other hand, based on that the greatness of the individuals has been proved or disproved, affirmed or discredited, or even improved or refined by the development of social as well as the changing of the case-to-case basis, the judgment of their offspring is becoming more and more complete as one saying goes “time is the best touchstone for us to judge one’s work”.

As far as I am concerned, we should place balanced emphasis on the opinion of the offspring and the contemporaries upon the greatness of the individuals. For one thing, the judgment of the contemporaries, coming from the experiences of the forefather as well as their own, turns out to be short term effects; for the other, the judgment of the offspring, coming from the individuals’ lasting value upon society whether in politics, economic or art, will be considered as long term effects. Both of them play a particular part in deciding the greatness of the individuals.

To sum up, the assertion that the greatness of the individuals can be decided by those who live after them is reasonable; however, the speaker neglect some individuals in art and politics, whose value can be recognized by their contemporaries. In my opinion, we should consult the views of the both to objectively and completely evaluate the greatness of the individuals.

The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals is decided by those who live after them rather than by their contemporaries. Actually, in my view, both the contemporaries and their offspring play a significant role in the judgment of the individuals’ greatness, the former from the short term effects[effect,复数形式是动产] while the later from the long term effects[chinglish]; what’s more, the opinions from those who live after them[chinglish, 用in the later time] are more objective and complete[all-sided全面的].

No one can deny the significance of their contemporaries in recognizing the greatness of the individuals, especially in the realm of art[梵高貌似未被认同]. Artistic works[works of art] can be judged by their first value by whether or not satisfy their readers’ aesthetic taste. For supporting[这个词有点画蛇添脚了] example, one need look no further than the greatness of Mark Twain[本句看不懂什么意思], an[a] world-wild[wide] famous novelist, whose works exert[时态不对] positive influence upon his present society[又是chinglish, influence his present society positive] and been[没有has怎么会用been] high evaluated by his contemporaries , even today Mark twain is a best-selling author and household name. For another convictive illustration, in the political realm, the greatness of a politic figure can be decided[用evaluated好] by his[前面用politic figures ,这里用their, his的话遇到女权主义者就完蛋了,这点要特别注意,属于几大禁忌之一] contemporaries in any[other] country as well as by his citizens for the simple reason that his contemporaries can experience the influence of the measures introduced[被动句少用一点] by him and make fail[fair] judgments on it.[每段在例子举完后要小结一下] [逻辑不对,本段应是要说有些情况下是当代人的评价比较客观,可是你的理由是当代人受了伟人的影响,这个似乎牵强一些,应该对比后时代的人来说这个问题,要体现出有些情况下当代人有优势,打个比方:评价某个伟人的历史作用,后时代的人是通过史料,但是史料未必完整可能导致评价不客观,而当代人的话就不存在这一问题,这就是优势。]

Those who live after them may make more objective and well-round statement on the greatness of individuals than their contemporaries. On the one hand, towards the greatness of the individuals, the views of their offspring will turn out to be objective as they need not to take the background of the individuals’ era[这句的意思是不用考虑时代背景,那不是反而使评价不客观了吗?] and the influence to that age into consideration. On the other hand, based on that the greatness of the individuals has been proved or disproved, affirmed or discredited,[第二个or组合多余,意思重复] or even improved or refined by the development of social as well as the changing of the case-to-case basis, the judgment of their offspring is becoming more and more complete as one[one’s] saying goes “time is the best touchstone for us to judge one’s work”.

As far as I am concerned, we should place balanced emphasis on the opinion of the offspring and the contemporaries upon the greatness of the individuals. For one thing, the judgment of the contemporaries, coming from the experiences of the forefather as well as their own, turns out to be short term effects[这句是说当代人评价是短期影响吗?和首段意思不一致阿。首段说的是当代人从伟人的短期影响考虑。]; for the other, the judgment of the offspring, coming from the individuals’ lasting value upon society whether in politics, economic or art, will be considered as long term effects.[这句话翻成中文是:后人评价从长期价值角度考虑,因此是长期影响。完全不知所云!] Both of them play a particular part in deciding the greatness of the individuals.

To sum up, the assertion that the greatness of the individuals can be decided by those who live after them is reasonable; however, the speaker neglect some individuals in art and politics, whose value can be recognized by their contemporaries. In my opinion, we should consult the views of the both[我们来评价的话这还是等于后人评价,不如说有时遵照当代人评价,有时后人评价比较好] to objectively and completely evaluate the greatness of the individuals.
