TOPIC: ARGUMENT2 - The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.

"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that in order to improve property values in Deerhaven Acres, homeowners should adopt their own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer points out that average property values of nearby Brooklville community is as three times as before since homeowners in it adopted a set of restrictions on what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted and how the community’s yards should be landscaped. The argument seems reasonable, but a careful examination of it would reveal how groundless it is.

To begin with, the fact that the appreciated average property values in Brookville lends little support to the conclusion. The arguer provides no evidences that the measures taken by homeowners in nearby Brookville community are responsible for the improvement of average property values. It is entirely possible that other factors, such as the coming of an influx of new residents or the improvement of public facilities, caused the appreciation of the property. Without considering and ruling out theses and other factors that might have served to raise the average property values in Brookville, the arguer cannot justifiably conclude that these measures led to the increase of average property values in Brookville.

Furthermore, even assuming that the increases of average property values are attributable to the implementation of these restrictions, the arguer show no evidences that the restrictions will take same effect in Deerhaven Acres. Lacking such evidences, it is just as likely that the average property values in Deerhaven Acres will not rise though homeowners in Deerhaven Acres put their own restrictions into practice. Perhaps the homebuyers in Deerhaven Acres aren’t interested in the appearance of the property at all. Or perhaps the economy in Deerhave Acres doesn’t prosperous like Brookviile. Although the appearance is attractive after adopting the restrictions, the potential buyer can’t afford it. For that matter, the restriction cannot make the average property values in Deerahve Acres appreciate. So the arguer cannot convince me to accept the conclusion.

In summary, the conclusion reached in the argument lacks credibility since the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To better evaluate the argument,
make the argument more convincing, the arguer should provide more information concerning that whether the restriction is responsible for the increase of average property values in Brookviiley. To better evaluate the argument, we need more concrete evidence that the differences between Brookviile and Deerhave Acres, otherwise the argument is logically unacceptable.
