ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS: 505 TIME: 0:45:00 Tony DATE: 2006-7-27
Is it our duty to obey the just laws while disobey and resist unjust laws? If we could judge the law just or unjust clearly I concede that we should do as the speaker claims, otherwise, I disagree with the speaker for the reasons that I illustrate bellow.
Admittedly, people should obey laws consciously, especially the just ones. We need laws to restrain people's behavior in order to create a peaceful environment to live in. It is the human character that calls for restriction by laws and if there isn't any, we will fall into chaos as a result people could do nothing normally. Take a simple example of traffic laws. Everyday we walk or drive on the road, all the people, at least, most of the people obey the traffic laws, so that our traffic is normal and safe. When someone breaks the laws, as a man drive in the wrong side of the road, there must be a traffic jam immediately, because he would meet a car face to face, and neither of them could move a little. That's just one person break the laws. If we don't have any law, or most of the people disobey it, imagine what the world would be! It is laws who give us freedom. Thus when there is a law and we think it is just, we should obey it unconditionally.
However, not all the laws we should obey. Nowadays, in many countries, there are many laws which are unjust, even discriminating. If we should all obey such laws, it is unjust for the people who are discriminated. For example, in some places where racialism still exists, black people are being discriminated and the laws there are not just for them. Under this condition, they should fight for their right, of course, though peaceful way, as the famous person Martin Laser King, in USA. Examples can be found everywhere, like many people with some special kind of disease is not allowed to get a job in some company. Laws like this should not be obeyed and even we have the responsibility to resist them.
Additionally, it is not easy to judge just laws from unjust ones. There is not any unified standard which could put the laws into two group, just ones and unjust ones. Sometimes laws just protect the benefit of the highest class of the society and sometimes laws have to made according to the religion principles or other social ethics. Maybe some of the people could accept the laws while some others could not, such as laws about abortion. Thus, we should not put us to the extreme that obeying the laws as well as disobeying them. Both the condition would impede the process of the democracy in the nation.
In sum, I can't agree with the speaker that we should obey just laws while resist the unjust ones except we can judge the laws between just and unjust ones clearly. If we could not do this well, we should obey the laws conditionally.
