ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Technology has made our lives more convineint nowadays than before.Nevertheless, could we replace all the traditional methods to do things by the means with technology? Concerning television and books, could we entirely learn by watching television instead of reading books?In my point of view, the two means of learning are both beneficial and meanwhile one can't replace by the other.

In concomitance with the prevalence of the television, we have assimilated more and more information and knowledge from it and learned a lot. Nowadays, people tend to watch television to grasp some information, rather than read books. This could be explained by the fact that watching television would receives larger quantity of information in a certain time than reading books.Whereas in some extent, especially the scientific phenomenon, explaination could be more precise and intuitionistic by videos than words.Let's take a famous scientific experiment which had been done by Galileo for example.Which of the two metal ball of different mass would firstly fall down on the ground when we put them at the same height? The result is obviously clear after we watch the video of the experiment on television and only a few explanations can lead us to the truth.And more over,our interests will be inspired by the weird phenomenon which might controvert with our old thoughts.But when it comes to the words in the book, more elusive and boring would the explanations to be understood.

Nevertheless, reading books ,especially literatures, can inspire the imagination of the readers while watching television does little in it.This is very simple to explain. While we are watching television, we tend to receive the images which show us , rather than imagine them. But when we are following the way on which the author leads us in the book,especially in the literature or poem,  the imaginatory vision embeds in our mind and we are almost flying out of the words themselves in the book.And what's more, literatures and poems can even inspire us to feel somewhat subtle, seems like we are in another world. At the same time, the rhythms and contents in them also attract us, meanwhile lead us to the weird bottom of our heart,in other words, it is the books which make the guard of the heart open the gate of our spiritual world and let us meditate the meaning of our lives.However, Could we meditate, not only think of, the meaning of our life in front of the T.V?I don't think the swift rhythm of the television programs would spare us time to think deeply.

In conclusion, reading books and watching T.V are equally important for learning. While television could provides more information meanwhile more intuitionisticly, reading could inspire people to imagine and meditate.
