TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
In this issue, the author states that scandals in different fields can be useful because they can make us focused on problems while speakers or reformers cannot. I concede scandals, to some degree, do have some positive functions on public however it also distracts our concentration from many important things.
People, due to curiosity, are always eager to know scandals in detail as a consequence more reporters are willing to dig the news and now when we unfold a piece of newspaper or open the television lots of scandals about those superstars in politics, academia etc rush to our eyes. Some scandals do reflect serious problems existing in our society and give us lessons. In the areas of politics and law, scandals often reveal astonishing news about some leaders and their lives. A famous example is the Watergate scandal which was an isolated incidence of underhanded campaign tactics at that time. But afterwards in government official's work scrutiny and accountability are increased to a higher level which is beneficial to public.
Let us review another example in science. More recently, Korea biologist Hwang Woo Suk declare to the world he had cloned a dog successfully which is rewarded as a progress in this area. However to our big surprise this achievement was proved to be fictive. The world of science was startled. How can a respected scientist do this? He wasted lots of fund of the country, brought shame on science and lost his reputation at last. In fact, this scandal reflects serious problem widely hidden in scientific research like part of graduate students alter their experiments' data in order to get a good result. From Suk's example, we must notice that science can not accept any falsehood and anything that conceals the reality will be discovered finally. Compared to the real and vivid examples, any words of speakers or reformers are barren and do not have such force to influence people.
Yet, on the other hand, concentration on scandals will distract us from some more important work. In my middle school, many classmates have their beloved idols like singers, movie stars or football players. Once scandals of them are reported by media, they surely will attend the news from the beginning to the end. In the class they read the newspaper and discuss the content after class in this case their energy on study is distracted severely. But they only get perhaps a joke feigned by some media and their grades decline that is not worth the candle. To the society, I remember when most of people concern Clinton sex scandal in 1998, those pitiful people living in Kosovo were not concerned enough while they may need more care and more help. In short, scandals often make us miss much more and that should be avoided.
In sum, I agree that sometimes scandals can supervise our life especially in political and science. Some system may be completed and mistakes may decrease as the result of the scandals. But in some area like entertainment scandals often are not reliable, and are always used by businessmen to attract more customs. If we put too much energy on scandals that perhaps will affect our normal lives. So we'd better attend the scandal abstemiously.

People, due to curiosity, are always eager to know scandals in detail as a consequence more reporters are willing to dig the news and now when we unfold a piece of newspaper or openturn on the television lots of scandals about those superstars in politics, academia etc, rush to our eyes. Some scandals do reflect serious problems existing in our society and give us lessons. In the areas of politics and law, scandals often reveal astonishing news about some leaders and their lives. However to our big surprise this achievement was proved to be fictive. The world of science was startled. How can a respected scientist do this? He wasted lots of fund of the country, brought shame on science and lost his reputation at last. 这几句感觉有点罗嗦,可以写成一个长句的In fact, this scandal reflects serious problem widely hidden in scientific research like part of graduate students alter their experiments' data in order to get a good result.这里的这个例子感觉不应该和前面连到一起讲 From Suk's example, we must notice that science can not accept any falsehood and anything that conceals the reality will be discovered finally. Compared to the real and vivid examples, any words of speakers or reformers are barren and do not have such force to influence people.这里感觉说的有点绝对
