In the university, students are facing the problem whether to choose many subjects or only subject. Different universities have varied policies. In my opinion, the proper method to apply should be based on the concrete discipline and the specific stage of study.

First of all, the difference of various discipline is so remarkable that it cannot to establish a model to follow for all disciplines. On one hand, a myriad of disciplines are multidisciplinary thanks to the development of technology. For example, bioinformatics is a discipline integrated with biology, computer science, and modern mathematics. For those disciplines, it is inevitable to set many subjects for students. On the other hand, some disciplines are not necessarily to acquire the broad base and horizon because of their specialization. Therefore, for a student majored in modern statistics, it is wise to choose the subject focused on statistics, not all subjects including geometry, topology.

Besides that, even for a single discipline, it should adjust appropriate model at different stage of study. At the early stage, it is common and indispensable to absorb subjects as many as possible. The basic and core subjects, such as philosophy, advanced mathematics, are helpful for almost any student in the aspect of critical thinking and organized expression. With the further study, students’ limited energy should be located at the essential subject in order to make great progress in the end.

In conclusion, types of class should be scrutinized case by case. The inherent properties of discipline and different stages of study should be taken into consideration to determine an efficient way for students.

The vigorous fields with bright prospect, like bioinformatics, nanotechnology, are inevitably interdisciplinary subjects. Therefore, how can students be competent in such discipline without a broad base and great horizon? A student of bioinformatics should master biology, computer science, and modern mathematics very well. In addition, other fundamental subjects, such as mathematics, foreign language, computer, are indispensable to construct a complete knowledge system for any university student.

Another reason is that the pace of knowledge updates is increasingly accelerated. What students learn at university may be obsolete when they graduate. Only the extensive learning can offer the sufficient possibility to catch up with the frontier. What extensive study strengthens is not only the grand selection of detailed knowledge, but also a method to acquire new knowledge.

What’s more, extensive study in university provides a chance to realize the interest of students. It is common that not all students are clear about their own interest before they get in touch with the concrete subject. Extensive study can avoid the blind choice, and make full use of initiatives of students. Students will find their own interests through the various subjects.
