Issue38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Since the first television system was setting into gear in 1940s, its role in people’s life has experienced tremendous changes from a curious object to an information machine, from a solely entertaining box to an education helper. Thus the assertion made by speaker, which is a controversial topic in every society, actually indicates a fundamental reformation of our education, however, whether our teaching system should choose from the book and television is still open to doubt.
Books have served as the main channel for people to obtain knowledge for a really long time, as long as you can trace back to the ancient time when the book were scrolls such as Book of Bible or the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Time flies and humanbeings use these piles of papers to record all their intelligence and passed them down to us. Descartes once remarked “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest man of past centuries.” Because books are the accumulation of the past great minds and great cultures, which can provide us with incomparable broad and fundamental knowledge in various fields such as art, music, literature, mathematics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, etc.. In ancient China, we have an erudite mentor, Kongzi, who tutored thousands of students contributing to China for centuries. After his death, his disciples wrote down all his words in a book which then became the essence of Ru, an still influential philosophical school in China, through which we learned to love each other and found the proper way to treat everything happen in life. In the ancient Greek, Plato’s school also compiles many books in every field to impart profound knowledge to the students. Although some people may argue that we have many television program explaining the great thoughts in the past and contemporary, however, the television industry is mainly a profit driven one in which educational programs only constitute a small part while entertaining ones hold the priority. I am afraid the endless book list may deface the arguers since an overall and profound knowledge can only be found in the books rather than the TV box.
Besides, compared with television, books can meet the specific needs of every person towards intelligence. TV programs seldom, if any are made for individuals, which means they have to concern all the audiences in general while put away the mass’s different demands. For instance, in a program which teaches you three dishes to cook, you are not able to skip the first two you have already known straightly to the third one you wish to learn. And when you forget an important step, you can not go back to check or reaffirm it unless you have recorded that program. A book about cooking can solve for you all the problems.
However, it is also unfair to say that learning by television is avoid of advantages. It has been tested and verified that the visualized information are more easily to be remembered, be you are a kid or an adult. Kids first learn by images and sounds when they can not read. I still remember when I was about ten, I saw a program called Sesame Street which taught kids to learn English through the conversation of some toys. Those English sentences and phrases hardened into my memory and lighted my interest towards this foreign language, which can not be done by any book. Even when I grow up, I learn many vivid knowledge about the nature through BBC’s Discovery, which I would have not touched for my life if they were written in some biological books.
To sum up, the two methods of learning—through books or through television programs—do not necessarily exclude each other. No matter it is in our educational system or in our daily life, only an appropriate combination of the two plus other advanced technological assistances can secure a successful education and a broad and profound mind.
