TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

Outline:
1.In the first place, scandals frequently happen in the fields of politics, which usually relate a lot with the corruption or power abusing of the political leaders or government and such problems universally exist in many countries.
2.Similarly, business scandals, which are even more prevalent in modern society than the political scandals, arise from the greed or smugness of the corporation leaders.
3.We should not simply pay attention or even over-attention on such exposed problems but take suitable measurements to figure them out.

The author claims that scandals are useful in focusing the public's attention on various problems. In general, I agree with this assertion in that scandals usually serve to call our attentions to the social problems, espicially in political or economical field .Furthermore, I think the society should try the best effort to solve the exposed problems.

In the first place, scandals frequently happen in the fields of politics, which usually relate to the corruption or power abusing of the political leaders or government and such problems universally exist in many countries. By leading a negative impact on the interests of the society as well as the public, such political scandals always result in mistrust between government and the public. The Watergate scandal, which acts as a designation of the most famous political scandals in the U.S.A, began with burglary and wiretapping of Democratic Party’s meetings and finally ended in the first resignation of the American president, Richard M. Nixon. This scandal happened because the president misused his power to violate the interests of the American citizens, finally leading him and the government to a public protest and severe criticism. Such scandals and related problems deserve the public attentions.

Similarly, business scandals, which are even more prevalent in modern society than the political scandals, arise from the greed or smugness of the corporation leaders. And such scandals not only result in the bankruptcy of the company but also do harm to the interests of the employees. The Enron Corporation, ever billed "American Most Creative Company" by the Fortune magazine, collapsed in December 2001, which is viewed as the largest bankruptcy in the American history. The business scandal resulted from the fact that it had reported the profits falsely. Leaders of Enron, who should be charged for the bankruptcy of company, sold their stocks out before the corporation collapsed while the employees, however, had to lose their jobs as well as much money invested in the Enron stock. Thus, since economical problem are closely linked to the interests of the people, we must give our attention to business scandals and the exposed problems.

Finally, the typical examples that I listed above uncover many social problems that needed to be noticed, whether in politics, business or other areas, yet we should not simply pay attention or even over-attention on such exposed problems but take suitable measurements to figure them out. For example, in order to prevent the single leader from abusing his powers in politics, supervision over the government should be spread widely and become a necessary part in a majority of political procedures. While in the business field, reformed laws should be passed in regulating the economical process and at the same time the ability of some associations to investigate business fraud should be strengthened. Consequently, no matter in what areas the government as well as the public should seek methods to solve the problem exposed by the scandals and make sure that the similar ones would never come out in the future.

To sum up, exposing scandals often contributes a lot to draw the public attention on those exposed problems and taking advantage of such attention the society should find effective ways to solve them.
