TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."

Does a public official have to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards to be an effective leader, as the author asserts? As far as I am concerned, ethics and morality are very important principles to an individual in the society, especially to a public official.

To begin with, officials holding high ethical and moral standards are more likely to gain trusts from the public. People's confidence plays an essential role in the operation of government. If the government lose the confidence of its people because of the low ethical or moral standards of its officials, people will expect new competent ones to replace them. One typical example to illustrate this point is President Richard Nixon. Nixon's administration was consumed by the Watergate scandal, in which burglars sponsored by his re-election campaign were caught attempting to bug the offices of the Democratic National Committee. Furthermore, after this affair was revealed, Nixon even refused to admit his bad behavior and ordered FBI not to investigate it. After all, Nixon had to resigned since his support and popularity nationwide eroded. This event severely shook the faith of the American people in the presidency just because Nixon had badly broken the normal moral standards which a president should stick to. This kind of examples are abundant in history. we can easily conclude how important the high ethics and moral standards are to a politician from these similar lessons.

Besides, governmental institutions can work efficiently if their officials deal with their task according to high ethical and moral standards. As we all know, when political theory, ideology, practice come into sharp contradiction with the morality, they lose their efficacy and are doomed to failure in the end. Conversely, if officials consider more about ethical and moral factors when developing their work, they will find it going on more smoothly then ever before.

However, in spite of the significance of ethics and morals, a pubic official does not need to maintain the highest standards of them. Since people are born with some defects, we almost cannot avoid committing some fallacies sometimes.  Nobody is utterly good or bad. As long as it does not influence an official's successful leadership, we can accept it. Take Bill Cliton for example, despite his improper love affair with Lewinsky, he still keep high approval rating among American people because of his excellent performance as a president.

In conclusion, public officials should work basically according to the rules established by the government, and at the same time try to pursue the appropriately high standards of ethics and morality.
即使遇到不如意,也要善待自己,善待父母,朋友,我们每一个人都是为爱而生的.

After all(after all 是毕竟的意思啊,这里是不是应该用after all of these啊), Nixon had to resigned since his support and popularity nationwide eroded. This event severely shook the faith of the American people in the presidency just because Nixon had badly broken the normal moral standards which a president should stick to. This kind of examples are( 改为is) abundant in history. We can easily conclude how important the high ethics and moral standards are to a politician from these similar lessons.

However, in spite of the significance of ethics and morals, a pubic official does not need to maintain the highest standards of them. Take Bill Cliton(Clinton) for example, despite his improper love affair with Lewinsky, he still keep high approval rating among American people because of his excellent performance as a president.
