43. "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
According to the author's opinion, only by maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards, can a public official be an effective leader. I basically agree with the author's opinion, [however前一般是另起一句的] however, we should also know that the highest standards are hard to achieve for leaders to some degrees [to some extent] .
First of all, it is necessary for those leaders, who want to keep effective leadership, to maintain highest ethical and moral standards when they are in their powers [in power/in office]. We can get many examples, [Many examples are disposable] which can justify this point vividly, from various industries [:confused:工业?] , such as political field, business realm and so on. The Watergate scandal in 1974 can serve as the most typical example in political field. Because of the unreliable moral behavior of the president Nixon, the congress had to impeach him under the immense pressure coming from the citizens of America, and which has [不要] directly led to the resignation of Nixon several days after the process of impeachment was started. From this instance, we know that it is really of great importance for politician [复数] to hold high ethical and moral standards; otherwise, you would be kicked out by your people for your untrustworthy behavior.
Moreover, maintaining high moral standards is of the same significance in the business realm as in the political field. [与上一段在论述同一个观点, 没必要另起一段] If a leader of an enterprise is surrounded by scandals all day long, then the leader would probably step down in a short time, or else the enterprise would be ruined in his hands. Hence, in order to be an effective enterprise leader, the officials of a corporation should maintain ethical and moral standards as high as possible. Only by keeping himself in good moral standards, can a Chief Executive Officer convince his employees that he is really an effective leader. So, we can get the conclusion that, for an official working in an enterprise, who wants to lead his staff in a high efficiency, it is also of remarkable importance to maintain high ethical and moral standards.
However, we should also know that it is not an easy thing to be in the highest moral standards for a leader. As for leaders are usually at the top of the power, thus there are many temptations, which are usually placed by some other people, exist in those leaders’ daily lives. [这就有点讲不通了. 诱惑多难道是犯错误的理由吗? 如果他们不能抵挡诱惑, 民众又有什么必要将他们置于那么高的位子上呢?] As a result, it is rather difficult for leaders to maintain highest moral standards. Besides this, almost all leaders are not moralists and they are also common people in some sense, hence we need not require them to be in the highest moral standards. [这点可以. 领导也是凡人, 有七情六欲, 难保不犯错误.] They will commit mistakes in many conditions as common people do. We can take Bill Clinton, the former president of USA, as an example. Although he was got into [...was mired in] the sexual scandal when he was in power, however, many American people thought that it was forgivable for the president to commit such a flaw in some sense; after all, he was just an ordinary man in some degrees. In a word, in a large sense the highest standard is really a bit too hard to reach for a leader, who is common people as well.
In summary, it is very likely that many people may still remain unconvinced, however, what I have analyzed above would at least make those people realize the complexities of this issue under discussion. [CAUTION! 作者不是要什么很多人信服. 只要让批阅者觉得有道理就行了] Indeed, to maintain high ethical and moral standards is really of great importance to leaders, especially those who want to build an effective leadership among his staff, nevertheless, the highest standard is not easy to achieve, as the speaker said. After all, leaders are ordinary people too; hence, it is a little unfair to demand them to be the top ones in morality and ethics. |
