Outline
1 It is the inherent principle of development for any field to be emerged with other field that is often manipulated by an outsider.
2 Outsider can bring new research methods, tools and theory, all of which are indispensable for the significant development of any field.
3 Historically, significant advancement of most fields was completed by outsider’s great contribution.
I strongly agree that outsider is necessary for significant advance of any field, insofar as it has been at least one key factor for fast development of a field. This statement can be illustrated by following reasons and facts.
On one hand, it is the inherent principle of development for any field to be emerged with other field that is often manipulated by an outsider. Any field can be compared as a circle, in which the development is just like the outspread of the circle. So, if the given field continues to be expanded, at a given time it has to connect with and absorb an outsider circle. Then with new center and scope brought about by the outsider, the concerning subject would advance significantly. In some sense, the more outsider circle the given field connected with, the faster and bigger stride it would make. Without the join of outsider, it would be difficult for a given field to find its new center and expand its scope markedly.
On the other hand, outsider can bring new research methods, tools and theory, all of which are indispensable for the significant development of any field. There are inevitably some limitations and disadvantages in research method, tools and theory for any field. By introducing new research method, tools and theory provided by an outsider, people can activate and promote the development of a given field with the new energy from outsider. Physics, for instance, at its early times, was closely related with philosophy that can provide physics with important methodologies and direction. Untill Issaic Newton, the famous physicist and also well known mathematician, introduced differentiation and integration into physics, did this field advance dramatically with the effective integral and differential calculation. It was the outsider mathematic principle introduced to physics that has open an era of flouring physics for almost 100 years.
Historically, significant advancement of most fields was completed by outsider’s great contribution. Also, we can take the development of modern physics as an example. After the comprehensive and complete exploitation of mechanics in physics activated by Issaic Newton, Maxwell and other scientists, most of which are both physician and mathematician, introduced statistics into physics. By doing so, not only have problems of thermodynamics been solved conveniently and successfully, but also have some great contributions been made to the quantum physics. Another example is the combination of chemistry and biology, with each other as a necessary outsider, the two subjects have coupled together to enhance mutual development and form biochemistry which is the hottest subject as the basis of life science nowadays. These examples can illustrate explicitly how the outsider could propel a concerning field significantly.
In an increasingly interdependent world, outsider is necessary and indispensable for significant advancement of any given field. A field without outsider is just like a lake without inlet supplementing rivers in an arid world, it would be difficult to withstand not mention to expand.
