Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

In an era of fast development, people in increasing number tend to value the merits of pragmatism. At the same time, idealism is discarded as an out-fashioned way to deal with problems we are faced with. I fundamentally agree with this trend insofar as pragmatism does play an crucial role in the development of the society, but we should not overlook the function of idealistic views.

In the business field, the function of pragmatism can be most obviously seen. Since the ultimate objective of business is to achieve profit maximization for the shareholders, the company's chief executives usually try their best to reach the goal, of course, in a practical way. Considering the complexity of the relationship between business competitors and constant change of the unstable market situation, the decision-maker of a company must adjust his strategies at any time needed according to the actual environment. Anyone who attempt to make an ideal planning to satisfy all the conditions is doomed to failure.

When it comes to academics, pragmatism often leads the orientation of the scientific research and cultural improvement. In today's people-oriented society, most of the inventions and technology progress is aimed at improving the living standard of people and most literature works are trying to satisfy the spiritual needs of the masses. For supporting examples, one need not to go any further but to check the commonplace around us. Nowadays mobile phone has become very popular among people. As the progress of the sophisticated technology, the functions of mobile phone have become more and easy to operate while the price of it has declined to a level even an ordinary person can afford. This illustrate the point that only the technology which can benefit people in a practical way has a higher chance to develop rapidly.

With respect to the political field, we can also easily feel the popularity of pragmatism. Take the election for example, no matter which kind of election, from a monitor of a class to a president of a nation, any candidate who want to obtain the position he wants must propose or promise some policies which would directly benefit the voters. Otherwise he/she will surely lose to someone who does.

It is true that pragmatism has take precedence over idealism in almost every field of people's lives, however, we still should concede that it is the case only in the short term. To achieve something good in the long run, we should not overlook the function of idealistic views. On the one hand, they may not work at present because of the neglect of the most people, nevertheless with the advance of the society more and more people will realize their values. On the other hand, some of these idealistic views can not be put into practice considering the limited level of economics and technology, nevertheless, they play their potential role when the conditions is permitted in the future.

In conclusion, practical views function effectively in almost any realm of life in short time and often are favored by the average people since they can get immediate profits from their application. However, never should we neglect the importance of the idealistic views since they are usually beneficial in the long run.
