TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 527 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-8-11
If the goal is worthy, isn't it any means is justifiable? In this issue, the answer is yes which I strongly disagree. Although the purpose is worthy, when choosing the way to reach it we must consider its influence otherwise there will be some unexpected result even harm to people.
First I concede that trying one's best to achieve one's goal is no fault at all. Actually persist in trying every possible method to achieve the goal is a precious spirit which is very necessary and vital to any one. For example, Great Soul Gandhi fasted many times in order to strive for independence of India. He even said he’s honorable to go to jail for a just cause. And the means taken by Gandhi had an important function and influence on struggle for freedom. To some degree, as long as being able to achieving the goal, any means is worth trying though sometimes it sounds unreasonable.
However, that does not indicate any means can be taken no matter what result it may have. As we all know, selfishness is a flaw in human nature. Sometimes, if one persists on his/her own view without considering others' benefit, perhaps the goal can be obtained at last while much more of the influence is the deep hurt to other people. For example, Hitler who wanted to build an empire as he expected enkindled the Second World War in which more than 100 countries were involved. Out of his own discrimination on Jews, thousands of innocent Jews were killed ferociously in concentration camps. This is a tragedy. Maybe at some moment, Hitler reached his goal but he brought to this world more harm and catastrophe as a result he is criticized by people, by society and history. This example tells us in front of choosing means for our goal, we must overcome the selfishness in other word anybody, as a member of the society, should has the responsibility to concern other people. Only in this way, our effort can not hurt others and can be accepted by society.
Additionally, if we take the means which satisfy our need based on sacrificing others' benefit, finally we must receive punishment in this democratic and law society today. In this case, what we have lost is much more than the benefit we have attained. Let us review the area of business. In 1999 General Motor Corporation was sentenced to pay 4.9 billion dollar to customs of their cars. The reason for this is General Motor Corporation has concealed the oil leaking in gasoline tank in order not to lose their business. Yet, due to this flaw, several customs were burnt seriously while driving its car. The wrong means of deceiving customs taken by General Motor brought the company more lost in finance also in prestige and credit. In this lesson, the means is not only unjustifiable but also shortsighted. If the designers of General Motor take a long term on their cause they may not make this mistake.
In conclusion, on our way to success, everyone should remember two points: one is taking advantage of every possible method to get to your destination otherwise you may feel regretted. On the other hand, you also need to know any means must be built on not damaging others' legal benefit. Only in this way, your success is really contributed to the society.
