It is difficult to say the meaning of such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormail pursuits. In my view correct, these studies play little role to the soceity nowadays, however, in the time long ago, like middle ages, the place of non-mainstream areas in the daily life is important. It is an equally situation that individual meet something without explication of mainstream reseach today.
Industry, agriculture, and everything support the morden society is based on the knowlede human gained from the mainstream reaseach. Literature, art, other human science is also the result of studies of the field as mainstream. After Watt invent steam engine, the industral revolution alter the whole world. And it is absurd to believe the inventions like steam engine is due to the research no-mainstream science. Renaissance, a revolution in Europe before industrial revolution, identify true beauty and human right in a reasonable way, and provide a expanded scope of human’ spirit. Apparently, during Renaissance, advanced work in mainstream is the source of the revolution. Untill today, the development of human depends on mainstream science, as no one believes a developing nation will rapidly become a developed one for a spell of a wizard.
Compared to mainstream science, non-mainstream science is weak to communication with others, including mainstream scientists and substantiate and show its opinion to general public individuals, thus it is unlikely for people to extensive accept such as astrology and fortune-telling. Mainstream science always have a compelling way to spread its influence over the world, by math formulation or experient can be exam repeatly, scientists have reported the accurat location of a plant in the space and forecast weather exactly. In contrast, people engageing in fortune-telling try to predict the end of the earth, and other tragedies, but actually the prediction always fails. The phenomenon alleged to be a consquence of psychic usually fails to occur even by the same way that it happened last time. As non-mainstream science lacks efficient accesses to communicate with other peoples, and to assure the credibility of the theory is full of troubles, few are willing to believe the viewpoint of non-mainstream science.
However, there are some instance we puzzle forever, and in the sense of development, some puzzles sloves, then new one emerges, thus astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits will exist for the human’s curiosity to the ouside world. In ancient world, for example, the field we considered as non-mainstream part of knowledge is generally popular, because of puzzls. As long as there is a field hunman beings does not dabble, there will be a special way trying to show the possible explanation. That is the work of non-mainstream science.
To sum up, human’s interest to discover the world never ebb. Compare to the vast principle of nature, the amout of knowledge we gain will always lag. The interest of people usually focus on mainstream science, for its authentic and contribution to society. The content of non-mainstream will also accompany the world, but it does not play a vital role, just an addition.
