题目:ISSUE 50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
字数:624  (687,限时的时候,没写结尾段)        用时:0:45:00          日期:2006-8-25

In the college or university, students learn numerous theories relevant to their majors, and one of the most important tasks is that they should be able to put those theories learnt from class into practice. To reach this target, some people advocate that all faculties in the college and university level should take part in the practical activities relevant to their professions. At the first glance, the claim might sound logical and rational; however a careful consideration will show us that some of the faculties need to do as the advocate, and this is not necessarily the case for the rest.

To begin with, admittedly, some faculty whose teaching disciplines closely connected with the reality and practice are supposed to attend work outside the academic field but with respect to their professions. As for those disciplines, the studied theories and research particularly need to be checked or implemented in practice. Such fields include Economics, applied chemistry, Finance and so forth, and it is well known that such disciplines are based on the facts of reality and aims to solve practical problems. Take applied Finance for instance, the profession based on the research concerning the practical financial activities made by people in the financial market and the financial regulations. If the faculty merely do research in the college or university, never would they whether they newly-established model could explain the occurrence on the stock market, or it is impossible for them to produce a rational and effective suggestion for the improvement of bond market and assuage the potential financial crisis like the Asian crisis which astounded the world years ago. Besides, the more information acquired from the practical world, the more help the faculty could lend to their students to equip them for the future career. After all, many students would step into the society after graduation, and the understanding from the faculty would be helpful. Finally, the affluent experience outside the academic world, undoubtedly would lead to the illustration of theories more convincing and vivid, and perhaps to a large extent the effect of education might be promoted. In a word, in certain disciplines, the faculty walk out of the academic world might be meaningful and significant.

However, it is should be emphasized that too much practical work outside the academic field might bring some unexpected negative effects, such as the decline of research level and the quality of education. On the one hand, the increased time on outside work, more or less would result in the decreased energy, time, attention on the faculty's research and study in the college and university. Therefore, the faculty might feel lack of time and vigor fulfill their tasks and projects in the academic field, and finally the research level would be lowed down considerably. On the other hand, too much contact on the outside work would reduce the faculty’s time which previously are spent on preparation of the disciplines or guiding students in study. Consequently, we should find a balance between academic research and relevant outside work in terms of time, energy, and attention.

In addition, we must notice that not the faculty in all the disciplines should be advised to attend relevant practical work outside academic field. For instance, the theoretical mathematics, the theoretical physics, and philosophy and so forth are such disciplines. Take theoretical mathematics for example, it is true that seldom outside work exists for these faculty, since their professions are too theoretical and abstract, which mainly serve the development of other disciplines and science. Meanwhile, the practical work experience for faculty in these fields might be meaningless and not important to a considerable extent. Hence, in some profession, it is enough for the faculty to devote themselves to their research in the college and university.

To sum up, the situation and requirements in different areas differs significantly. Consequently we should have a detailed and thorough understanding of the very field, and based on which we could finally determine whether the faculty in the profession should be suggested to attend practical work besides academic research. Additionally, the balance between practical experience and academic study should be well considered to avoid unwanted blight.

issue50 revision

In the college or university, students learn numerous theories relevant to their majors, and one of the most important tasks is that they should be able to put those theories learnt from class into practice. To reach this target, some people advocate that all faculties in the college and university level should take part in the practical activities relevant to their professions. At the first glance, the claim might sound logical and rational; however a careful consideration will show us that some of the faculties need to do as the advocate, and(是不是but更好?) this is not necessarily the case for the rest.

If the faculty merely do research in the college or university, never would they (know)whether they newly-established model could explain the occurrence on the stock market, or it is impossible for them to produce a rational and effective suggestion for the improvement of bond market and assuage the potential financial crisis like the Asian crisis which astounded the world years ago. In a word, in certain disciplines, the faculty walk out of the academic world might be meaningful and significant(这句话似乎有语病).
这一段是不是太多了点? 是不是写完后觉得意犹未尽?

On the one hand, the increased time on outside work, more or less would result in the decreased energy, time, attention on the faculty's research and study in the college and university. Therefore, the faculty might feel lack of time and vigor (to)fulfill their tasks and projects in the academic field, and finally the research level would be lowed down considerably. On the other hand, too much contact on the outside work would reduce the faculty’s time which previously are spent on preparation of the disciplines or guiding students in study. Consequently, we should find a balance between academic research and relevant outside work in terms of time, energy, and attention.
