In this information age, people are overwhelmed with daily generated news or topics concerning with public figures. Flourishing media provide with us not only the aspects related to celebrities' social affairs but also the trivia about their private lives. Taking into account celebrities, ordinary people and media involved in this controversial issue, I insist that public figures should expect people to be interested in their private lives.
To begin with, for public figures, it is entirely impossible for them separate their private lives with social images. No matter whether or not they are willing, private lives can not be completely divided from their entire lives. Sometimes, it is the public pressure for some exposure of their private lives. For instance, as to Liu Xiang, who has lately set the new world record in the 110-meters hurdles, hardly can he live a normal life as others. Society is interested in every respect of him, his diet, his singing, his family, his girlfriend and so on. What should he do is to behave morally and honestly to establish a role model to public, since any measure taken to protect his private life might be ineffective: wear a glass, try some new clothes or even change his hairstyle? It is likely that fans nationwide could easily pick him out among large amount people.
What is more, ordinary people, who are the chief consumers for any information relevant to celebrities, play a significant role in the inevitable exposure of famous people's private lives. Ordinary people serve as the origin of this special but common social phenomenon. They focus celebrities for admiration or jealousness or even just for preparing topics with their classmates or colleagues. Naturally, curiosity about those famous ones could be ascribed to human nature, in this way, Clinton's dog or Laura Bush's evening gowns can be their focus while in a sharp contrast some ordinary people's more meaningful events might skip under their eyes, for instance, a large group of people’s effort to commonweal might be ignored. Thus, the impetus from large groups might propel the dig for private lives of famous ones.
Further, unavoidably, it is the media that exert their power to focus on celebrities' private lives and make them available for public. Media, most media, target at earning profits and collecting money as much as possible. Any ambitious executives of media might adopt any measure to gain more money, of course, under the restriction of law. As mentioned above, public show their great curiosity to celebrities' private lives, thus, media employ it and cater ordinary people's surprise. In such way, their publications or programs are likely to have more readers or audiences, which finally results in more profits of their course. While it is sometimes seemly necessary for media to detect famous people's private lives, the advancing technology enable them to factually obtain some private information of celebrities. Some mini-camera or mini-recorder, and other high-technique equipped journalists can easily get access to what they need.
Nonetheless, despite it seems the unmasking of famous ones' private lives are quite reasonable and prevailing nowadays, each role discussed above has something to do with it. For celebrities, they should value their private lives, and forge a healthy image for public, since their behaviors can drastically influence the society. What should be pointed out is that some celebrities even intentionally expose some private information to media for some social effects and achieve their famousness, such behavior should be condemned. As for ordinary people, they should not trivialize celebrities’ private lives, and even some excessive requirement on their social affairs is irrational since nobody is perfect, though some curiosity is understandable. Likewise, media should assume the same responsibility, since their inspection on others’ privacy poses detrimental influence on celebrities’ normal lives and even worse harms their innocent family.
To sum up, it is indeed a normal social phenomenon for some emission or leak of public figures' privacy, and celebrities themselves should realize it and take care about it. |
