I sort of knew that you weren't going to transfer to the Ph.D. program from
the gossip I've heard, but you should have officially told me sooner...
You should tell me what your plans are.

If you want to go back to China with a masters or transfer into some second
tier university then you don't need my support, but if you want to go
somewhere great then you should understand that places will
ask me what I think about you.  If you want to go elsewhere good then you
need to set a schedule for me that clearly outlines what you think you can
get accomplished before the application deadlines.  I can comment on your
potential, but for someone applying with a masters what really matters in
the letter of recommendation is what's been done, not what the student plans
to do.

You also need to understand that if you turned in your first year report
document at a top place in the US in the state that you first presented it
to me you'd most likely get booted out of the program. So, I am here to
help, and I admit I must do this since the group lacks senior students, but
for me to put forth effort you must remain optimistic, willing to learn and
work with serious dedication.

You also must realize that I don't have the hours to write really nice
comments about the documents students give me. I have to be blunt or nothing
would ever get written, and that's the same everywhere.  So don't get
offended if anyone criticizes your writing in the future.

Finally, I think you are good enough that you should get into some place
like Harvard for your Ph.D.  However, you need to prove to me now that you
belong there, which means that you need to be pushing yourself much harder
than your peers.  You haven't been doing that.

就看见她/他说让你申harvard了。有这句话就够了。你只要看核心意思：

1. remain optimistic
2. willing to learn
3. work with serious dedication. (so that s/he will be "satisfied" enough to provide you a "good recommendation letter.)
