Too bad that I have to re-write this again. I wrote and submitted it and then it disappeared. Anyway, let's talk about the opportunities at Columbia first.

1. Columbia

(1) Pe'er Couple

Drs. Dana Pe'er http://www.columbia.edu/cu/biolo ... a-peer/faculty.html and Itsik Pe'er http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~itsik/ recently joined Columbia as assistant professors.

Dana is Assistant Professor of Biology and Computer Science while her husband
is Assistant professor of computer science.

Dana did her phd with Dr. Nir Friedman http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/~nir/ in School of Computer Science and Engineering Hebrew University. Her phd research topic is "Computation Methods for Analysis of Gene Expression Data". Then she moved to George
Church Lab http://arep.med.harvard.edu/  for postdoc work working on ''understanding the design and function of molecular networks'' http://arep.med.harvard.edu/~dpeer/. She ended up with establishing her 'Computational Systems Biology' lab at
Columbia University.

If you are lucky to get into Biological Science Program, you can also choose to work

who are also listed as doing research on "Systems and Computational Biology".
Back to Itsik, he got his phd in 2002 at Tel Aviv University. His thesis title is 'Algorithmic Methods for Reconstruction of Biological Sequences, Gene Orders and Maps '. His advisor is Ron Shamir http://www.math.tau.ac.il/~rshamir/, very famous in Bioinformatics. Itsik did his postdoc work in US and is now working on developing and applying novel computational methods in human genetics.

In CS Dept, there is another lady actively working on Bioinformatics, her name is Christina Leslie http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~cleslie/index.html .

(2) In addition to Pe'er couple, you might be interested in Biomedical Informatics Program http://www.dbmi.columbia.edu/bioinformatics/docs/people_new.html . But I guess this is more competitive than other programs.

2. UMich

Bioinformatics@Umich http://www.bioinformatics.med.umich.edu/ now seems recruits more students than previous years.

4. Brown
Brown has a Center for Computational Molecular Biology http://www.brown.edu/Research/CCMB/index.htm. It says that a graduate program in Computational Biology is currently under development. A lot of faculty are from CS dept  http://www.cs.brown.edu/research ... ional_biology.html.
