When great individual is concerned, a list of name comes into my mind, Martin Luther King, Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Galileo, Edison, Henry Ford, etc. What makes these individuals great men we all accept? It is their achievements and contributions to our society of course. However, as the achievement is mentioned, sometimes, it is not admitted by contemporaries due to its profundity which surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers, while in other time, it is approved for that it shows the great help or impact to the advance of society immediately and leave a deep impression in our mind.

In the history of United States, the society discriminated against the Blacks. They were deprived the right to vote, the opportunity to get a good job; their kids were also deprived the chance to get a good education; most of them were isolated in a dirty corner ignored by public. When Martin Luther King, the leader of the civil rights movement, stood up and said “I have a dream” in the square, people were shocked by the truth they ignored. With the position approved by his adherents, a movement fight for civil rights and against racialism was irresistible and impacted on our society so much that he left a deep impression in contemporaries’ brain.

By contrast, especially in science, it is sometimes difficult for contemporaries to identify the greatness of a genius, because the device may be not available or so difficult to use that other men could not replay the experiment he had carried out. In his own lifetime, Galileo was the center of violent controversy; his telescopic observations are justly immortal; but can we blame those who looked and failed to see what Galileo saw, if we remember that to use a telescope at the limit of its powers calls for long experience and intimate familiarity with one’s instrument? If we recall that in those days, curved glass was often used as a gadget to produce illusion, we would understand why they threw doubt on the discovery.

Sometimes, it is difficult for contemporaries to comprehend the theory discovered by genius, since its profundity surpassed the common cognition of general public at that age. Nevertheless, the validity of the discovery would be verified by more and more experiments and facts, then with the expand of other theory or advance of the device, it is approved by those who live after the talent. As theory of relativity was first introduced by Albert Einstein, almost no body understood the fundamental of the theory. No less did they believe that time would become longer when object move faster, because the phenomenon contradict with the common experience. But as the famous “m c square” formula was introduced in nuclear technology and light is found curved by gravitation of star, no body doubted its significance to practical life.

So in sum, whether the greatness and achievements of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries depends on the cognition of general public at the ago, it also depends on how great and immediate the help or impact was given to the community and impressed the individual at that years.
