The speaker asserts that it is through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement can we measure the extent of progress. However, in my opinion, whether we can use logic or precise measurement depends on the kind of progress we are concerning.

As in science and technology, most of the technical development of our society can be measure by precise numbers. Take the computer as an example. When the first computer came out, it was very slow. To figure out the speed, scientists at that time introduced a novel index called MIPS which means how many millions instructions processed per second. With the development of large scale integrated circuit, the speed of CPU is rising. Now, it is through the index that we are able to realize how far we have been away from origin in IT by comparing the report of the first computer invented decades before. Without this careful measurement, it is now really difficult to imagine that an 80286 desktop of 1980s has the same computing capability with the gigantic electronic monster which occupied a commodious hall in NASA for Apollo Mission.

As the progress in economy is concerned, the case here depends on what level we are talking about. On personal level, say, the personal finance can be measured by his/her income per month. We cannot simply tell you precisely whether a gentleman or a lady is poor or rich by the first sight. As for further investigation, we need more materials about his/her income such as stock, salary, estate value and so on. Then we can compare it with the average income of the society to judge how rich he/she is. On social level, however, the case is a little bit different. It seems that we can usually use GDP to decide the scale of social economic development, but after further consideration, we can always find some facts breaking the law such as the creativity of a country and the quality of the citizens. We cannot evaluate the creativity of a nation by just a set of numbers, let alone to judge the quality of its citizens by kind of logic or careful measurement. Since they are the real power that drives the economic progress of our society, we would have some bias in judging the progress of social economy without consideration of them.

Finally, when we come to some subjective fields such as art, it is almost impossible to find a reference point to indicate our development by either a precise measurement or logic reasoning, because we often judge its advance by change of its form or function. For example, when art had evolved from realism to expressionism, we cannot tell you whether it is an advance or not by only the number of works finished or any other careful measurement, since the standard here we use is how intense the shock or pleasure the author of the work has conveyed to us.

In sum, to judge how far we have advanced in a field, we must be aware of what the field is.
