TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

To begin with, the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses last year does not indicate the domestic cheeses will always be the best-selling cheeses. Perhaps the prices of domestic cheeses are much lower than the imported cheeses and the newest store located in a district with people of low income living there. Or it is entirely possible that the domestic cheeses were on sale at the newest store then. Without ruling out these possibilities, the author can not convince me that the domestic cheeses will sell well in long run.

In addition, a recent survey by the Cheese of the World magazine indicating an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers is not representative of the whole population. It is entirely possible that the subscribers of this kind of magazine are mostly low-income population, and they prefer domestic cheeses with low price. Or perhaps the Cheeses of the World magazine sent out 200 pieces of survey paper, but the only got 15 pieces of feedback. Without considering either of the two conditions, the author can not convince us to this unsubstantiated survey.

Finally, the author makes a hasty generalization that in order to improve profits all of their stores should stop stocking many of their varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate mainly on domestic cheeses. Even if most people are likely to prefer domestic cheeses, it is entirely possible that the domestic cheeses make very little profits. And perhaps cut down the prices of both domestic and imported cheeses to increase the selling amount are the best way to improve profits. Without considering these possibilities, the author’s hasty generalization is unreasonable.

To sum up, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the author should provide more information about the community where the newest store locates. To better assess it, I would need more information about the subscribers of the Cheeses of the World who take the survey.
