TOPIC: ISSUE235 - "Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty-whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution-is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."
WORDS: 832          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-12-19

这次两篇都写过...所以我还是从JJ里找了这个月考过的题写, 辛苦给我改作文的同学了
提纲:
1, 忠诚的本质
2, 忠诚的危害
3, 忠诚的必要性
基本为平衡论点

Loyalty has long been considered as an important virtue in most countries, as it stands for credibility and straightforward. Despite of its admitted negative function, I think such an admire does have its social reasons and we cannot deny the positive influences brought by loyalty. It is hard to say whether this virtue is more destructive or beneficial, according to its uncertainty, depending on how it is taken and deal with.

Fundamentally, considered as a basic morality, loyalty has played a vital role during the human history. Such a phenomenon lays mainly in national politics, family affairs and business realm. The very reason for us to accept and publicize loyalty is a sense of paying back, to those who have given us life, welfare and love. We consider a country as our motherland which provides us space to live in and society to take part in, therefore we can have value of existence. We pay it back by working for it as social members, giving it our efforts. We are born by our parents and they bring we up without asking for repaying. Such selfless actions are instincts of all creatures which want to propagate. But even animals know feed back their parents, say nothing of human beings, the most intelligent and developed creatures in the world. As for social agencies, such as schools and places of employment, although modern society has provided us a sense of contract relationship without much emotion, we do have reasons to thank those who provides us opportunities of jobs. However, such thanks can not be taken as loyalty in my view, especially enterprises are seeking profits and contract is the only realistic relation between employees and employers. To conclude, loyalty is a diversified and complicated social virtue which developed from sense of paying back and cannot be taken too extremely.

Admittedly, blind loyalty, despite of the other's justice, has caused many problems during our history. During the history of patriotism, the authorities of those monarchy or even democratic countries have long claimed their citizens should be loyal to them. Such a claim, realized by education and other publicizing methods, is for ruling and stability. Although in the premise that authorities are taking a right way of development, this claim may be beneficial to both the society and individuals, it will cause serious problems if they are exaggerated and make individuals lose ability to think independently. For instance, during the World War II, the Japanese soldiers had long been educated of their samurai spirits, which asked them to devote to their emperor with their lives. So in that invading war, terrible damage was brought by these loyal soldiers to the Pacific countries. The Japanese soldiers did massacres and killed their enemies cruelly, as they considered such inhumane actions as for their loyalty. After the war ended, many of them committed suicide also for shame and loyalty. Such a blind loyalty without independent thinking about humanity, morality and other virtues is harmful when it serves for those on a wrong way. The Japan's lesson has told us about this, awaking us keep an open mind on loyalty.

Nevertheless, loyalty can play a positive role if it is carefully taken, as a sense of credibility. We are now living in a world of trusting, where we support others and be supported by others. Besides the direct relations of profits, we do have our credibility in any social affairs. Being loyal to those who have given us much is a good action which shows our sense of morality. Loyalty is the opposite of betray. Those who doubt loyalty may think what will happen if betray is taken as a virtue in a society, resulting in chaos and risks of morality. The ancient empire of Rome is a striking example, whose citizens had built highly developed civilization and left their defending work to employed soldiers, who promised no loyalty to the empire. As a result, the country was trapped in life for enjoying and destroyed by its neighborhood. So certain loyalty is needed for a society's stability and development, since it can help us build a healthy relation between social members.

To sum up, it seems to me that no matter who a virtue supposes, it will devote to the society as long as it considers for the most social members' interests. The development of a society is the most important standard. Just as the former leader of China, Deng Xiaoping said, "No matter whether a cat is white or black, it is a good cat as long as it can catch mice." So we can analyze a virtue in both aspects of its reasons and its function, predicting whether it will help us build a beneficial value system. As long as we keep an open mind to loyalty, and as long as we emphasize the most people's interests and keep it on a right way, loyalty will help the society holding on in a correct way toward a better future.
