TOPIC: ISSUE11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
WORDS: 520          TIME: 上午 00:52:00          DATE: 2006-12-22

Should all nations help support the development of a global university for the purpose of solving the world's most persistent social problems, as the speaker recommends? I tend to agree that such a global university can bring desirable consequences in solving the world's most enduring social problems. Yet, strictly followed, the feasibility of such a global university deserves careful consideration and full deliberation.

To begin with, one compelling argument in favor of this global university has to do with the fact that the social problems have a tendency of globalization. Our world is becoming smaller and smaller as the development of contemporary telecommunication and internet. And events in one part of the world may be soon transmitted to the rest of the world instantaneously. For instance, the Asia Economic Crisis in 1998 primarily took place in Southeast Asia and soon spread to the rest of the world and deeply influences the whole capital market of the world. And this financial crisis may carry grave social aftermath such as unemployment, hunger or riots. Preventing these social problems requires global cooperation, and a global university is an excellent basis for multinational cooperation and one of the key factors for solving the world's most persistent social problems.

Another compelling argument for this global university involves the fact that all the professors and students of this global university from various countries would bring diverse perspective and social experiences towards the world's most persistent social problems. In my view all nations can benefit from a global university where some common social problems like unemployment, theft or epidemic illness can be studied and discussed with diverse cultural perspectives, or even with the practical experiences obtained from addressing certain problems by some countries before. Consider, for instance, the shortage of fuel is becoming a major concern for all nations. And different counties have different avenues in solving this, such as controlling the number of new private cars, developing a substitute or using a reproducible fuel, etc. These approaches can be used by other countries as reference while solving this problem. Thus, solving these world's most persistent problems requires experts with global perspective and experiences, which can be attained through cultivating students with multinational knowledge and experiences by the global university.

Notwithstanding the foregoing benefits a global university can bring us, the feasibility of such a global university is open to doubt. Such a global university asks for support from all participant nations, not only financial support but also intellectual investment and willingness to cooperate. Moreover, diverse nations might lay different emphasis on one common social problem, which might set into motion a hot debate among participant nations that which social problem should be prior to solve or which problem has the greatest social value. Thus, before overcoming a myriad of administration obstacles, a global university may arouse more contention among participant nations.

In sum, all nations can benefit from the global university as it can integrate scattered efforts of all nations on common social problems. On the other hand, in order to put this global university into practice all participating nations should prevent the inappropriate contention due to every nation's own interest.
