ISSUE 50 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
The speaker assert that we should let faculty of college and university spending time working outside the the campus in order to improve their quality of instruction. I agree that real-world experience does benefit both teacher and students in some aspects. Nonetheless, before we accept his plausible suggestion, we should consider different fields of study respectively.
As far as I concerned, not all fields could be improved by leting their faculty involving in the outside work, especially for humanities. Not only because there is no such kind of work fit for the professors, but also the academic study of these fields need not involve with a work in the outside world. Take philosophy as an apt example, philosophers need no work to give themselve inspiration, they seek the truth of life and universe just inside their head. Also, as a student of philosophy, one solely learn their subject from books and abstract thinking of themselves. No apt job in the outside world exists for them and need not to. Part of students would pursuit their career by taking a second degree, part of them would take a PHD in philosophy and become a real philosopher.
First of all, with the experience gain from the work, professors can complement their content of the class by correlate knowledge in the books with practice of the real-world, which could widen the vision of the students and stir up their interests. As for the economics, a professor working in a corporation as a consulter could teach students how to solve real-world problems using the formulas and models in books, which would be less attractive appearing in printed papers. When it comes to chemistry, professors stimulate the students by telling how the researchers devoted to invest a new substance for industrial use. After all, the work experience brought to the class by professors provide student a fresh attitude towards what they learn from the books, which is not merely things for memorizing anymore, but useful and needed by the society.
In addition, working experience also help professors to keep inform of changing demand of the outside world, which could contribute to their own specified study. No way could be better if one need cutting-edge issue for research than to engage in works related to one’s field. Without satisfied the need of the real-world, professor’s research might lack praticality to some extent. Moreover, the practical work involving soluting problems that cannot be seen by studying at school library or laboratory could inspires professors and in turn promote the development of the subject.
Finally, professors who involved with the outside world could help student to seek their career goal. As a student whose knowledge about work generally derives from their relatives which might simply irrelevant to their major, he is eager to know what can they do in a job related to their major. As a teacher as well as a worker, a professor not only could give more practical advices to students about how to prepare for a job, but also provide information about what the work would be like and whether the students are fit for it or not.
However, in order to balance the work inside and outside the academic world, the time professors takes to engage in the work outside the campus should be limited. Undue emphasis put on the outside work might gradually shift the focus of professor outside the academic world. This could result in decreasing time and frequency communicate with students, and fadding of interest in academic rearch.
In sum, except some particular fields, leting faculty work outside the academic world could benefits both students and professors, even accelerate the progress of knowledge. Nevertheless, we should let the professors put their emphasis on academic work by some practical ways of limitations.
