The statement that the effective education should meet each student’s needs and interests raises two questions of education. One is the meaning of truly effective education and the other is the relationship between individuality and generality in education. And the latter is the key point to achieve effective education.
It is clear that there are some obvious merits for education to meet individual needs and interests of students. As we all known, children, are born with different gift, comes from different family background and have different life experience. Thus each child has his own interests and purposes. If we find the talents of a child in his early year and then cultivate and educate him according to his talents, the child will probably achieve greater success in future. Aside from other unexpected factors in his future life, his accomplishments are promising in theory. Besides learning knowledge, education should also function to cultivate personality, morality and habits. The education, which designed to meet each student’s needs, can rectify each child's defects respectively to form an integrity character.
After looking insight into the merits of individual-aimed education, we should not ignore its idealism problems and defects. Although such kind of education can cultivate each child differently, respectively and purposefully, this education requires not only a large proportion of national taxation, but also at least the same amounts of qualified teachers as students. And more practically, it is nearly no way to organize and distribute national educational resources.
Besides the problems of resources, there is still a fundamental defect of the individual-oriented education and that is the deviation of educational purpose. It is not the only purpose of education to develop each individual by his own needs and interests. The education should also serve the society, output abundant specialties of all useful subjects, and have its people inherit their cultural backgrounds and ideology. However, the individual-oriented education can not prove to achieve this goal, since the individual's interests are not always according to social needs and sometimes quite utilitarianism. The relationship between individual interests and social needs is just like relationship of supply and demand, but to some extent the penalty of oversupplied or over demanded are much severe to both individuals and society. The penalty of individuals may be the difficulties of find jobs, while the penalties of society may lose its stability and ties of culture.
A typical example of individual-aimed education is a famous Chinese snooker player whose name is Ding Junhui. He stopped his schooling and started practicing snooker when he was 8, so he didn’t finish elementary education. But he won his first world champion in 2005. His success shows both the advantages and disadvantages of individual-aimed education.
Considering the both advantages of individual-aimed education and common education, in my view, education should emphasis on common education in its elementary and junior level, and give respect to individual differences in high education. According to this scheme, children will have roughly the same education background which is necessary and some localized features. And the diversion starts from college which leads to different majors.
In sum, the education can not be called effective without the combination of both individual-aimed and common education. The way of combination is an elaborate work and the judgment standard of it is whether this combination can achieve the goal of education.
