Is it the artist, not the critic, who brings society permanent value? The speaker claims so. However, concerning about furnishing permanent value, I regard critics as important as artists. Artists reflect their inner world through their artworks while critics translate and exhibit those values by explaining artworks and recreations.

To begin with, artists, as the first creators of artworks, furnish society lasting values for several reasons. First, works of arts, permeating into artist’s personal feelings and attitudes, would resonate among individuals if similar situations are obtained. Beethoven’s famous music ‘For Elise’ expressed the admiration sensations and persons may shape the same feeling at the moment they fall in love. Second, since the expressional methods of artistic creation are diverse and the originality of the masterpieces may absorb people’s sights, such masterpieces came to be popular and spread universally. Mona Lisa, created by a famous painting of the predominant painter, Da Vinci, was the pioneer to draw people without wings, effectively abstracting everyone’s eyeballs at that era and be discussed even in today’s society. Third, such paramount principles as fortitude, justice and honesty could be provided by novels and stories, and therefore people would coordinate their behavior to the social requirements by reading them. Above all, such masterpieces provide us lasting values and promote our ethical advancement.

Moreover, critics, like a bridge between artworks and the laypersons, play an indispensable and pivotal role in giving eternal values. Since some expressional methods of artists are hard to comprehend, or the words and phases of some literal works distinctively differ from what we prevailingly use, understanding the meaning of such works would be a tough and hard task for the majority. For example, the difficult apprehension of Chinese ancient literal article may prevent the masses from appreciation; moreover, the shortage of the sights for finding the artistic values may impede our evaluation of the irreplaceable worth, which may cause the loss of the precious treasures, hence the explanation and translation by critics would provide significant instructions about how to better understand and appreciate the arts. Besides, the course of analysis and interpretation by critics is also the process of artistic creation, and we could not deny that critics, to this extent acting as a creator, could supply the permanent values as well.

Nevertheless, the side effects should be prevented when excessively relying on critics to apprehend the signification of artworks since the critique of a certain artist brings subjective feelings of critics, hardly be justice and fair. When the value system of an artist contradicts with those of a critic, it is possible that the critic only focuses on how to lash out such works, which may be counterproductive to instruct individuals to attain a general comprehension. A typical example of it is the case of Voltaire’s rejection of Shakespeare, preventing people from better realizing the value of his literal works. The reason why he regarded Shakespeare as crude is only that he rarely conformed the same principle of literature to Voltaire’s. The undue attitudes artworks could hardly be evaluated in fair and just attitudes; hence it may be difficult to ensure its value being correctly recognized, let alone giving society lasting values. To this extent, most of us should form the appropriate attitudes about the comments and independently evaluate artists’ achievements.

To sum up, the role of artists as well as critics is crucial for supplying eternal values. Although critics seldom directly create the masterpieces, the comments about such artwork could help us realize the unique values of it and the course of re-creation is also a form of art, which could hardly be ignored. However, attention should be paid to prevent such critiques from determining our evaluation.
