Issue 99
In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political- the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simper, more immediate options.
Pragmatism, broadly defines as factions which could candle the problem directly and efficiently, is highly laudable for decades. An increasing number of complex problems, which make human being’s lives inconvenient, could be worked out satisfactorily by practical views or methods. Pragmatism in academic brings high-technology into your home, like personal computer and internet; pragmatism in social declines the crime rates and reduces unemployment; pragmatism in business spares no effort in enhancing productivity; pragmatism in political strives for women’s rights and racialism. But what is success? Not only the endless supplies of materials or the efficient, fast-paced life, but vivid psychological activities and pursuing to the ideal future can define success. When one could equally enjoy the abundant offerings from without, and the abundant imagination from within, it is terminally the acme of success.
Over pragmatism might cause the nearsightedness. When we relish the measureless products which produced by Industrial Revolution, could we somehow think a bit about the severe pollution that produced almost at the same time? When we are surfing on the internet, how many of us might realize the spiritual crisis which emphasized by new technology has been building for quite some time? When we are pursuing for a higher grade unscrupulously, who will put cheating a serious sense of shame? We consume what we have today, without thinking about our descendants. We have lots of things to do, but no reason to do them. We have been overemphasizing the practical view and relying on the resplendent material world.
Over pragmatism might also cause human’s deficient spiritual world. Development of society could never catch people’s headlong rush, and pragmatism could also never satisfy the unlimited human desire. If pragmatism has not unlimited measures to crack all the nuts, why shouldn’t we stop for a while, and take a gentle glance at our desolate inner desire? Our unconcerned hearts which eroded by over pragmatism might care nothing but material world.
While I am certainly not a idealist, I do believe we need to look for a bit more balance between pragmatism and idealism. Without pragmatism, society becomes slow developing and eventually inefficient. Without a society pursuing the spiritual affluence and sharing idealism, individuals become ignorant and isolated. Thus, while our for of society necessitates pragmatism, idealism is equally important. Pragmatism drives us forward in a supply of products and information while idealism makes sure we are still in the human’s spiritual world and know what the stakes are.
Outlines of Issue 186
“Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today’s world.”
1. Practicality definitely could enrich our material which is one of the most important standard of developed society.
2. As human’s limited rationality, sometimes, human could not foresee the practicality of themselves’ actions.
3. Humanity could never be measured by practicality whether humanity is backward or forward measured by the value we believe. |
