Warwick English Language Test
WELT is a recognised test of English language proficiency intended for students from non-native-English backgrounds who are applying to follow academic courses in a British university. Like other well-known English proficiency tests, WELT gives students a set of grades that indicates what their strengths and weaknesses are in a variety of language skills. The three specific language areas that WELT tests are Grammar and English Usage, Writing Skills and Academic Reading. WELT is similar to other language tests such as IELTS and TOEFL in that there is no actual pass or fail mark. Rather, each paper is graded individually, and each candidate is given a profile of scores. These scores are considered by the institution to which the candidate is applying. WELT differs from IELTS or TOEFL in that students are not asked to take a listening or speaking test. Candidates who take WELT will receive their results within 10 working days of taking the test, and an official WELT certificate is then issued, which serves as formal proof of a student's English proficiency.

As its name suggests, the University of Warwick English Language Test (WELT) was originally intended for use only within the University of Warwick. Today, the WELT is more widely recognised, and is taken not only by students applying to departments at Warwick, but by students wishing to follow courses in other universities within Britain. Other universities that currently use the WELT for their own applicants include Oxford Brookes University, Brunel University, University of Newcastle, University of East Anglia, Queen Mary University of London and University of Birmingham.

WELT can be taken each month at CELTE, University of Warwick. Students who wish to do the test at Warwick should contact the WELT secretary to arrange this. Additionally, candidates may take WELT in China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Taiwan and Thailand. The School of Languages at Oxford Brookes University and IESU, University of Birmingham also run regular monthly WELT sittings. The total duration of the WELT is two hours and forty-five minutes, and for convenience, all papers are taken on the same day.

What does the test do?

The Warwick English Language Test (WELT) provides a profile of your ability to work in English.

If your English is very good, you will get a high score, and the University will know that you do not need further language study.

If your English is of intermediate level, the University may recommend that you take an English course before you begin your studies.

If your English is not yet good enough to cope with study in a British University, you will be advised to re-apply when you have spent more time studying English.

How many papers are there?

Most candidates take 3 papers as follows,

Paper G1: Grammar and Usage
Paper G2: Writing
Paper G3: Academic Reading

How long does the test take?

The test takes about 3 hours. The time of each paper is as follows:

G1 Grammar and Usage (Sections A & B): 1 hour
G2 Writing: 45 minutes
G3 Academic Reading: 1 hour

What sort of questions are asked?

The Grammar and Usage Paper (G1) contains 100 short multiple choice items. There are 50 items in Section A and 50 items in Section B.

Section A tests your knowledge of basic English grammar. You are not expected to know grammatical terms but you need to be able to choose the best way to complete a sentence grammatically. Here is an example of the type of item on Paper G1 Section A:

EXAMPLE: She ..... me write a letter in English last night.

A. has helped C. helped
B. will help D. helps

ANSWER: C

This item tests your knowledge of verb tenses. The correct answer is C ('helped') because the sentence includes the words 'last night', which shows that the Past Simple tense is needed. A and D are present tenses and B expresses the future. So only C can be correct here.

Section B of Paper G1 tests your ability to understand short passages of written English. Here is an example of the type of item in this section:

EXAMPLE: The amount of meat eaten in France has increased in recent years. However, the French are eating less fish than they used to, probably because fish is:

A. better than meat
B. now rather expensive
C. good to eat
D. used in many recipes

ANSWER: B

The answer is B because this explains the reason why the French are eating less fish. The other answers might be reasons for eating more fish.

Some of the questions in this section test your use and understanding of English words, and some questions test your ability to understand the relationships between sentences or parts of sentences, in the way that the example above tests the relationship between a proposition and its possible cause.

Paper G1 is a long test and most candidates will not finish the paper. Work as quickly as you can and do not worry if you do not finish. Many students who are good at English do not manage to finish the test.

The Writing Paper (G2) tests your ability to write accurately and appropriately in an academic context. In a British university, the ability to write coherently is extremely important because students are expected to demonstrate their understanding and express their opinion through writing, e.g., assignments, projects or exams.

In this paper, you are normally given 2-3 topics to write about in about 200-400 words each (about half a page to a page of A4). The topics vary from, for example, social issues, environmental issues to personal interest. In one question you may describe something, and in another you may be asked to discuss and give your opinion for or against a topic.

The Academic Reading Paper (G3) tests your ability to read and understand longer passages of written English of the type that you might be expected to be able to read in a British university.

The paper begins with some questions to test your ability to read very quickly through a passage to find specific information, for example, the date when a certain event took place. Then you are required to read the other passages and to answer some questions. These questions will test such matters as how well you grasp the main ideas and the main purposes of the writer, and whether you understand the meaning and function of certain key words and phrases.

What is the best way to prepare for the Warwick English Language Test?

The test is designed to show the examiners how well you know English. It is a long test because we want to give you every opportunity to show what you can understand in English. Everything you have learnt in English will be useful to you.

During the week before the test, you should read as much as possible in English. It doesn't matter what you read: books, newspapers, or magazines. If you have a school textbook for English, work through some of the exercises and revise what you have studied. This will help you to read and think in English during the test.

What is the cost of the test?

Candidates pay a fee to take the test. The current fee is £40 to be paid on the day of the examination. Centres outside the UK may charge an additional fee to cover their expenses in running the test.

What is needed on the day of the test?

On the day of the Warwick English Language Test, you must come to the Test Centre in good time. You will need to bring the following items with you:

2 good pencils which write clearly
1 eraser
1 pencil sharpener
1 ball point pen

You will also need proof of identity, like a passport or driving licence which has your photograph on it.

You will not be permitted to use any dictionaries, other books or notes during the test.

At the end of each paper, all the question papers will be collected along with your answers.

Is there any special advice for taking the test?

During the test you should work quickly and answer as many questions as possible. If you find any question difficult, just leave it out and go on to the next question. Do not worry if you cannot finish the test: only the very quickest candidates are expected to finish.
