TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

Before suggesting ceasing the storage of imported cheese and concentrating on domestic cheeses for all the chain-cheese store that the speaker work in ,the evidence and the reasoning given in the argument above should be examined  by several angles . The speaker sets a series of false presumes , and uses imprecise evidence to infer the conclusion.

From the evidence given above, including their best-selling produce at their newest store and a survey giving by a cheese magazine, the speaker tries to prove that domestic cheeses are popular in these year .Actually ,this evidence itself can’t give a striking support to the conclusion.

First, that domestic cheeses sell like fun in the newest store can not prove same condition presenting in the whole country , for a special condition can’t behave on the generally condition. Probably, the waiters in the newest store commend the domestic cheeses to every client, or they sell domestic cheeses at a discount of 20% .Or ,perhaps the store is located in Wisconsin ,so their cheeses are much cheap than other cheeses. Even since other stores in these areas have not domestic cheeses, so domestic cheeses become their own characters. So we can not draw a conclusion that the domestic cheeses are more popular than the imported cheeses.

Second ,the recent survey by Cheeses of the world can’t give a correct prediction to the trend of cheese market. After all ,their readers aren’t on behalf of all the cheeses customs. In fact, the major cheese customs are not see the special magazines, and just choose cheeses by their habits. While the readers of this magazine are probably cheese producers , cheese dealers , cheese judges, their views are not same with the masses. It is then not reasonable to assert that domestic cheeses will increase the preference.

Even if the evidence above is persuasive, domestic cheeses are more popular than imported cheeses, there is also no indication that selling cheeses can get more profits. Maybe there is too much domestic cheeses producers, and also too much domestic cheeses dealers. While imported cheeses can profit further from their rarity. Therefore the actual profits of domestic cheeses are less than imported cheeses. So good sales don’t necessarily indicate to good profits.
If we concede that good domestic sales can bring good profits, the final conclusion, that stopping stocking the imported cheeses and concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses is the best way to improve profits, is still doubtable. Perhaps , by increasing the category to add the characters of the company is the best way .Before ruling out any other possibility of improving profits , the conclusion speaker give above is not persuasive.

After analyzing and examining the evidence as well as the speaker’s reasoning, the recommendation of ceasing imported cheeses storage should be reconsidered. To strengthen the argument ,the speaker should give more convincing evidence to justify that selling domestic cheese can got more profits than selling imported cheeses ,and also the domestic cheeses really meet the trend of cheese consume. Further speaker should rule out any other possible reasons for improving the profits.
