TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 473 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-1-13
The critic is to artist what tongue is to the cate. When it comes to who gives the lasting value to the society, people had better to consider first: which creates far-reaching savories, tongue or cate? Obviously, it is the cate. And then we can easily check out the answer to the former question.
As a famous poet wrote, "dark night grants me dark eyes, with which I look for brightness." And the artist discovers the beauty, reveals the beauty, and creates the beauty, with brushes, pigments and caverns. On the one hand, artists with their acute eyes and personal understanding, put the beauty around us, yet usually ignored by the majorities into the light after discovering it. The smile of Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, for instance, gives people pleasure and relaxation for decades, and will last for a long time. On the other hand, as beauty's creators, artists also give lasting value to the society. To demonstrate this point, one needs to look no further to Eiffel Tower, the best sign of romantic and modern Paris, which was, is, and will be valued by generations even after the artist died years later. Therefore, artists are certain to be gone away someday, but the social value of their creations never has a deadline.
Moreover, it is the artist who reveals the hidden ideas and impulse of the society. No one would deny that every society at every time has its separate merits and flaws, which are typical in the particular situation and environment. To record those precious prelidge, artists volunteer to make it with their talents and hard work. History is fraught with such examples, like Beatles who composed a lot of songs crying for the undesirable society filled with homosexuality, racial discrimination, etc. In this sense, the contemporary society in which artists have ever lived in has disappeared, while the art keeps the value.
Admittedly, the critic, serving as a filter, determines which art is worth our time and attention and which is potential to give the society something of lasting value as well. Thanks to these critics with profound comprehension with art, artists are able to retrospect their own creations in a more comprehensive view and improve them efficiently. Unfortunately, for they only point out the mistakes and deficiencies on the existed art rather than create art by themselves, critic leaves few memory and lasting value to the society as time passes by.
In sum, both the artist and the critic contribute to the society. Without the artist, people would always live in the dull routines and rapid life earning; without the critic, people would be confused with numerous existing arts, both precious and valueless. But comparing such two kinds of elites, if I take leave to doubt, it is the artist who gives the society something of lasting value. |
