With the development of modern technology and economy, our day-to-day life is greatly influenced. Yet, are social customs and ethics not only influenced but determined by technologies, as the speaker asserts? In my view, I agree that technologies indeed influence social customs and ethics, however the speaker unnecessarily extend the function of technologies to determine social customs and ethics.

Obviously, the development of technology has greatly influenced our daily lives. And the changes of people’s living condition lead to the variation of social customs. Consider, for instance, with the development of transportation tools, especially the invention of automobiles, the wedding ceremony has greatly changed. In ancient times, men in China and Asian countries usually used horses or sedan chair to take brides home. However, since the last fifty years, people preferred cars or automobiles such as Benz to take brides home. So the social customs are influenced by the development of technologies. Another apt example involves the changing means of conferences. With the invention of telephone, the custom of traditional face to face conferences has been replaced by the telephone meeting due to the demand of joint-venture or multinational companies. Nevertheless, after the development of internet and media, many corporations now hold internet-based visible meetings.

Additionally, technology has a notable impact on ethics. An argument in favor of this involves the legislation of sanctioning abortion in some countries. For the development of modern medical technologies, many pregnant women- single or not- take abortion in hospital. People in some countries or with some religions consider this as a kind of murder and want legislation to ban this immoral behavior. However, others think we should regard the pregnant women's ideas rather than the council and church. Till now, due to the hot debate about abortion which involves complicated ethical issues and human rights, abortion is legal in some countries while illegal in the rest. Thus, technologies have influenced ethics to some extent and in some respects.

However, technology is not the only factor that influences social customs and ethics. It is known to all that social customs pass down from one generation to another. Thus, the traditional culture and characteristic of nations and races also influence social customs and ethics highly. Consider the example of abortion mentioned above, it is usually the people believe in Jesus and Catholics that oppose abortion but the people with belief in Buddhism seldom has contradictory opinion on it. Therefore, religions may be one of the most important factors that influence social customs and ethics. So the speaker's assertion that technologies actually determine social customs and ethics is ungrounded.

In conclusion, in this era of fast developing technologies, social customs and ethics are remarkably influenced by the development of technologies. However, there are many other factors that also have huge influence on social customs and ethics and the technologies are mere one of them let alone determine social customs and ethics.
