I concede with the speaker that nowadays, though science and technology has greatly developed, some nonmainstream areas of inquiry, such as astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits still play a vital role in society, since to some extent, it could satisfy some of the human psychology needs as well as provide help at some aspects. While at the same time, one should not overlook the possible problems that may be brought by those nonmainstream areas, and the development of science has showed that gradually, when people could get more in-depth explanations from the mainstream science, the emphasis that has been put on those nonmainstream sciences will be reduced, even be eliminated.

It could not be denied that during the long history of human development, especially when people did not have so many knowledge to understand and explain the things they met and different phenomena happened around them, the nonmainstream areas, has took great effect in solving their puzzles, making them calm down, letting them feel safe. When one by chance see the UFOs fly through the sky, or the great cycles in such regular pattern, appears inside the farms in one night, except referring to the paranormal explanations, how could one find answers in our daily science? Or one might watch the show of a people who could use his mind to fry an egg, to move a piece of paper on the table – let us believe it is not a shell game -- in this kind of situation, one might definitely believe in psychic and the mind of people could really change some physical exist in the world. Most people would like to find a reason for the things they meet, in some cases, when they could not, they will feel anxious and puzzle, the best way at that time is to rely on some explanations that they think might answer the questions, no matter mainstream or nonmainstream. As long as there are phenomena that could not be explained by science, there will be the belief of some nonmainstreams areas of inquiry.

Not only do these nonmainstream sciences help people from the psychology level, when looking back into our history, we will find that those areas also help to solve some real problems people met – that may explain why they are so prosperous to a large extent. In the ancient times, people do not have advanced equipments to help show them directions when they take long joinery, then how could they make themselves not lost in the mountains, in the widest plain or even in the endless desert? The astrologer helped to solve that problem long time ago. From very ancient time, they have found that the stars, especially the Charles's Wain, could help to show the directions, even travel in along the ocean, the stars and the profound knowledge of astrology could help people arrive the other shore safely. Nowadays, no one will try to use the alchemy to get golden, but one could not deny the propelling force of the alchemy to the modern chemistry. Many ideas, methodologies were took from the old alchemy and adopted by the chemistry now.
       
Though helped a lot on the mental and application level to people, one should admit that the over development and over relying on these nonmainstream sciences might cause many problems. It is often reported that people, especially some senior people, would not go to the hospital when they are ill. Comparably, they would rather stay at home, pray to the so-called ghost could help them to recover from the illness. Undoubtedly, the development of science over the last hundreds of years give us great confidence that in this kind of speed, one could expect that more and more enigma will be solved sooner or later.

All in all, during the development of human civilization, we do see the great contributions from the nonmainstream areas to people. Take good use of them and with the further development of science and technology, one day we’ll expect a world that has no definition of mainstream and nonmainstream science, just one word—science.
