150"Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."
With the advent of TV network and internet that links the world together; we now can enjoy beautiful scenes vividly through a mere screen. For better or for worse, those inventions definitely influence the business of tourism. Unlike those who permissively predict the obsolete of tourism, I am quite sure that tourism would prosperous in the digital age for several compelling reasons.
Admittedly, modern people can experience a mimic tour though a TV program or a well-designed web-site, which to some extent matches the visual part of a journey. Just setting in the couch, one could immerse in the extraordinary scene of a foreign country, follow a beautiful guide lady walking along the exotic street, and watch her eating delicious food and chatting with natives. Somehow one might be as familiar with the places as those who actually have been there before. However, is that all a person consider when he planning a yearning journey? Of course not.
When one decides to take a tour, what does he/she want? I think there are basically two things they are looking for. First of all, a chance to relax and change an atmosphere, it is especially true in the modern world where workers devote their last energy to the well-being of the society, or to the profits of a cooperation, render them leave little time for themselves. Though a country tour or a sight-seeing visit, they could spend time alone with those they appreciate, families, lovers, friends and children. In the second place, they can exercise by climbing up mountains; enjoy the sun on the beach, swim in sea and ext. All of these could not be achieved by surfing on a traveling website.
Virtually, a real tourist would find watching scenes from a man-made screen rather bore and meaningless. The experience lies behind those breath-taking places is equally memorable. By traveling personally, one can chat with the natives themselves, talk about subject they interested in, even make friends along the road. For example, a friend of mine fond of Shakespeare gained precious story of the master’ s grow-up by chatting with the natives while visiting Stratford, which became a treasure to her forever. And my personal experience tells me it is very likely to make friends who share the same interest with you during the journey. Moreover, tasting local food, experiencing the exotic culture, even taking a deep breath of fresh air all add up to the excitement of traveling, which could not offered by a digital motion or mere imagination.
Finally, since traveling become cheaper and more convenience in contemporary world, the trend of tourism would be promoted by the prevailing of related TV program and the web site which provide easier assessment of information needed by DIY-traveling. Those dislike being restricted by group tourism might find useful information promptly on specialized travel-guide websites. In addition, as the transnational tourism become affordable both in time and money to ordinary people, those visual programs actually arouse their interest and help them to choose the most compelling one, otherwise they could only browse though the photos in books which is less appealing. The TV programs and internet, therefore, serve as a driving force to the prosperous of tourism.
In sum, the assertion that the spread of TV and internet would damage the popularity of tourism is superficial and disprove both by the status quo and the experience of whoever traveled before. Tourism provides us a chance to enjoy ourselves physically and mentally, which is much superior to a two-dimensional movement irrelevant to us in the first place.
